I Saw a Grebe

I glanced out the window and saw a big commotion in the water of the pond near us. I grabbed the binoculars to see what was happening. I saw a dark, shiny grebe. It is a shorebird that dives underwater. I spent several minutes watching it dive and come up. I hoped he would come up with a fish but he went behind a hedge and I did not see him anymore. I don't think I ever saw one before. It was amazing to watch him. Here is an article if you want to find out more. Have you ever seen a grebe diving under water? What did you think?

No, I've never seen a grebe but I watched a blue heron eat all the fish out of a pond I'd just stocked once. I was not happy. (We put wire mesh over the pond before I stocked it again.)

I saw blue herons fighting in another place I lived. They don't seem friendly but they probably are grateful for the meal you provided. Mesh is good to keep the greedy things from eating your pond fish.

@akalinus I've only seen blue herons one at a time, so no fighting. I'm sure it was happy with the free meal... but my wallet wasn't too pleased about it.

Thanks. What kind of creatures are near you? I think I remember seeing kangaroos in your pictures. I have only seen them in a zoo. I know there are super big bugs, snakes, and other nasties there.

@JudyEv I thought coyotes lived everywhere. I am surprised you don't have bears or big cats. I keep hearing about these awful things that live in Australia.

@akalinus Our populations of nasties is over-rated. I don't think we have any more than most other countries. Apart from crocodiles, we don't have any man-eating/killing animals such as bears, pumas, coyotes, etc.

@RebeccasFarm It is a small pond in the back of this building. We see small animals on the patio/ Alex the cat runs from one side to the other watching a squirrel, a blue jay, or butterflies. He never goes outside but can look at nature. I heard that there is an alligator in the pond but I have never seen it.

Maybe I could have if I was thinking. I am not used to video-taking and usually forget. If I see it again, I will try posting a video.

We have aquatic birds that dive underwater to catch the fish. I like to watch them when we go by the lake.

@akalinus As we lived by the sea during 31 years, I used to see them almost every day.

@LadyDuck Did the magic of watching them wear off or are you still excited to see them in action? I am near a small pond and am surprised there are so many shorebirds here. Yesterday when the sun was just right, I could see the fish swimming around. It was amazing to watch. I keep hoping to see the alligator but have not yet. I hope the grebe comes back but there are a lot of ponds around here and maybe he was just visiting.

They are so interesting to watch. They swim, dive in, and swim underwater. I have never seen one in real life and am so excited that I got to see one.in action.

@LindaOHio I am in Florida. I was in New Mexico when a duckling fell out of a truck and ran right to me. We had her for years and named her Lucky. We thought she was a boy until she started laying eggs.

I love ducks also. I had one as a pet and have seen it stand on its head in the water. I want to see if I can photograph some shore birds. They are sneaky and won't freeze for the camera.

@akalinus What state are you in if you don't mind my asking? We had 2 pet mallards. The guy before us clipped their wings. We let them grow out; and in the spring they flew off. One circled the house, quacked and then took off. They were so cool.

Oh, how cool! I don’t think I have ever seen one of those in person, and I didn’t know what they were called.

When I was a kid, I read something about how Chinese fishermen caught fish by using them. They put a ring around their necks to keep them from eating the fish. They then bring the fish to the boat. After fishing is done, they give the grebes lots of fish to eat.
