The Oubliette

What a horrid thing! This has a French origin and means "to forget". It is a small dungeon in old castles that were used to hide away enemies. Back in the Middle Ages law and order was much different than it is today. If you wanted an enemy done away with you might put them in the oubliette and just forget about him/her. There is no light coming in it and it is rather small. Positioned in an area where inhabitants might not even notice it unless they knew it existed. Read more about them here:

Oublier is the French verb that translates in "to forget" oubliette means dungeon with access only through a trapdoor in its ceiling.

@LadyDuck ........Thanks for the Frend lesson. Such a small space and then to just be forgotten. No water, or food. Have to use the toilet right there. Yuck!

@celticeagle The smallest I have seen where in the London Dungeon. I was sick only looking at those places. Better to die or be killed than to live there.

Someone would follow someone else up a secret staircase that would give way under them (after the first person pulled a secret lever, of course), and the unwanted person would suddenly find themselves whooshing down a tunnel to a room with no way out... Yeah, the good old days...

I’ve read about those things. They mostly locked people away who owed money they couldn’t pay and people they considered useless even children.
