A failure – but then two successes!

As a keen user of Freegle I receive a daily digest of all the ‘offered’ and ‘wanted’ posts in my group. A few days ago I noticed that someone was asking for a clock key. Then yesterday, while looking through a tub of old keys, I found a clock key and remembered the wanted post. First I checked that I had keys to fit the various old clocks I have around the place, but I seemed to have what was needed, so I offered the clock key to the man from Freegle (Keith). As it happened I saw that Keith lives very close to my daughter’s school, and since the weather was forecast to be very stormy yesterday I had volunteered to pick her up in the car to save her cycling in the strong winds and rain. So I said I could call round with the key for him to try. Sadly, the key wasn’t quite big enough for the clock that Keith needed it for. But in the course of conversation about clocks, he happened to mention that a man who lived on the next road repairs clocks, which is just what I need since I have inherited several old clocks that no longer work but I can’t bear to just throw out! Keith promised to pass on his details when he found them. And I promised to keep a look out for any larger clock key that might fit his clock. He was as good as his word and shortly after I left I received an email with the clock-repairer’s details. Then yesterday evening, while rummaging in the kitchen drawer, I found a radiator key, and realised that it was very similar to a clock key – shorter, but with the same square-shaped hole, and slightly larger diameter than the key I still had in my pocket. So I emailed Keith to say ‘By the way - this might be a silly question, but have you tried a radiator key? Only I just found one of those and it is just slightly wider than the clock key I had (but shorter).’ And this morning I was happy to receive an email saying ‘I’ve tried the radiator key and it is a perfect fit for my clock!!! Thanks for the advice...wonderful.’ So it all worked out really well in the end! I am still feeling really happy about it It’s so nice when you can help someone like that – and when it’s so easy, why wouldn’t you? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

I think Freegle is UK only but Freecycle is very similar and is an American organisation. Have a look

I’ve got one of those multi keys which has a selection to chose from. Radiator, gas/electric cabinet, and I dare say clock although I don’t have any windy up ones. Too much trouble now I’ve gone digital and smart. I did inherit a lovely mantle clock which wasn’t working which I took to the local clock repairer, but the estimate was in the hundreds, so I didn’t bother. At least it’s right twice a day and I don’t have to put it forward and back. Apart from that it’s useless.

I have a whole selection, and as you say the cost of repair is bound to me a multiple of their value. Nevertheless I'm going to investigate.
