We did well with our sweep tickets

We’re home from watching the Melbourne Cup horse-race at our clubhouse. The race is run at about 3 pm in Victoria which, at the moment, is midday for us. Once the race was over, we were treated to a very enjoyable lunch. When we arrived at the luncheon we bought tickets in sweeps. There were four sweeps on offer and tickets ranged from $10 to $2 each and you didn’t know what horses you’d be getting till all the sweep tickets were sold. Vince had a ticket in the $10, $5, $2 and $1 sweeps and I had tickets in the $5, $2 and $1. For an outlay of $30, we won back $90 so we were very happy indeed. Now we’re home and thinking we might have time for a quick nap before dinner. The photo is of a horse in full flight but he wouldn’t win the Melbourne Cup.

I'm taking a 'spread bet' to mean 'each way' but this was a sweep. You put your name down (and your money!) and took your chance on what horse you drew. So with 24 horses in the $10 sweep, they have $240 to divide up between 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Same system with the lesser amounts.

The meal was very enjoyable too. There is an entertainment committee and they do a great job of coming up with fun outings for the residents.
