Farewell old faithfuls

I am finally going to have to say goodbye to my old gardening trousers. I have had these trousers for years – decades in fact. I’m fairly sure my mother bought them in the 1970s from a shop that was having a closing-down sale. I remember she bought several pairs of a similar style in different colours, I think they were 50p each. Flares were in fashion at the time, so nobody wanted these. Later (when narrow trousers were back ‘in’) I remember wearing them to school, when we had some special event and it was a non-uniform day. I wore them with a white ‘Princess Di’ style blouse with a little round collar and a lace yoke. They have been in and out of fashion many times. When trousers were wider, they stayed in the bottom of the drawer, then when narrow trousers were back ‘in’, out they came again. At one point they were relegated to gardening duties, but then when they became trendy again I gave them a wash and brush-up and they were back to smart occasions. I fitted a pocket, and replaced the elastic ‘stirrups’ that go under the feet. But finally I think I have to admit they are past it. They are hardly fit to be seen, even in the garden, since the fabric at the inside top of each leg is all worn into huge holes (from wearing them when cycling) and they have big snags all over from getting caught on thorns. And there's a smear of paint I can't get off. I don’t think I can find even one small usable area of fabric I could make into something else! Still I’m having trouble actually throwing them out. I need to just do it. But first I will save the button and zip for use in some future project. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2023.

I know the feeling. I recently got rid of a shirt that I wore decades ago. It was difficult. It’s strange that we can be sentimental even about clothing.

I have two shirts that are also decades old (one blue, one pink) and my daughters make fun of me when I wear them. I tell them all the time I'm leaving each of them one in my will

You gave it many good lives, young lady. If an inanimate object could talk, they would commend you. I currently have a shirt 22 years old, and I can only hope it lives as many lives as your trousers!

All good things must come to an end! I don't much like getting rid of clothing either. They feel like old friends sometimes.

I wish I could say that to some of the clothes I own. They are ages old but look as good as new Quite fed up wearing them but cannot discard them either.

It can be really hard to get rid of some clothes. I cut the legs of some jeans and wore them as shorts when we had the farmlet. I didn't even hem the legs but I can hardly wear them in suburbia.

They still look wearable to me... you should see my favorite gardening culottes (or maybe not, they're are a bit embarrassing). They started out as respectable clothing but I've redone the elastic in the waistband a few times, and cut off the cuffs because they were fraying, even reused the material from the cuffs to reinforce one leg... But the best thing? They have pockets! So handy when mucking about in the garden.

Really "old faithfuls" !! The oldest I have is one jacket from early 2000s and one from early 2007. Some other shirts are from mid 2000s but nothing close to your 70s stuff!

I like to wear clothes until they are really worn out and falling apart. Than I have to get rid of them.

I filled four bags of clothes yesterday. I finally decided it was time to get parted with them.

Your pants have certainly witnessed a big portion of your life. Time to retire them! Have a good weekend.
