An interesting building

On a bit of a wander off the main roads recently I came across this interesting house. An internet search revealed that the bridge was built in 1849 by an architect called Ambrose Poynter, for Edward Pryce Lloyd, first Baron Mostyn, to get across the road which crosses his estate without having to mix with the hoi polloi, one assumes. A simple bridge would have done the job but for some reason the decision was made to build a rather handsome lodge over it (from photos, it looks nicer from the front and back as approached from the estate). Of course that means it has two archways – the one you can see in the photo, for the public road to pass through, and a second one above that, at right angles, for Baron Mostyn’s drive to pass through. I wonder what it would be like to live in? These days I think I would be too worried about the building being struck by a large lorry sent on a detour by some misguided GPS system to really relax and enjoy the setting, which must be beautiful. Presumably it would also be necessary to go upstairs and then down again to get from one ground floor room to another. I wonder what it's like inside? My first thought was "A mini-castle!" Since there doesn't seem to be a gate, the lodge isn't for a gatekeeper. Must be for a troll...

There is a gate on the drive above.

It looks like it may only be as wide as the bridge so there may not actually be downstairs rooms. I wouldn't trust GPS if I lived there, either... Mine has sent me off on "explorations" at times. Once, it sent me down an alleyway that was about four inches wider than my car. (I turned off "Alleys" after that misdirection and didn't worry about those anymore.) I can't imagine what you have to turn off to keep it from sending you down roads like the one under that bridge.

From the level of the ground above, it has two storeys, and there is an arch in the middle of the lower one, so yes it has a ground floor. Here's a picture I found of it

@Fleura I see the picture but it looks like the road for the Baron is the ground floor.

I always wonder about heating buildings like that. The hoi polloi funny, the second time I have run across that phrase in my life, and the first was on Frasier..(he always thinks he is a cut above,) It isn't a common phrase here.

Yes I don't know what they do about heating. Of course it was built in the days of open fires in every room. Actually I haven't heard anyone refer to the hoi polloi for a while either, but it just popped into my head!

Maybe the Baron had a penchant for watching cars go by

Oh he didn't actually live there, he had a bigger house for himself. And of course in 1849 there were no cars!

@Fleura So it is mainly just decorative?

@flapiz On the level above the road, it acts as a gatehouse to the drive which goes over the road

I would have loved to have lived in a very big house, preferably with secret rooms and big libraries, etc. But I'd only want to do it if I had a maid or six.

I always wanted a house with two staircases! Also I would have loved to have a big tree outside my bedroom window so I could climb out undetected, as children often do in stories!!

You never think of things like that, lorry's striking it, until someone mentions it. lol. I'd say that's pretty gosh darn unique though. Pictures of the inside would be awesome to see.

I couldn't find any pictures of the interior, perhaps unsurprisingly. Here's a bit more about it:

The building has an air of mystery.I think the amenities inside the building must be out of date.

That’s definitely a peculiar building. Like you, I couldn’t imagine living there with the traffic going underneath and the threat of a large vehicle getting stuck or causing damage to the structure.

Of course when it was built nothing much would pass underneath except the odd horse and cart or perhaps a few bicycles. I wonder if you have to go upstairs and back down again to get from one downstairs room to another?

Weird to built a building over a bridge. Quite frankly I would not feel a bit safe living inside.

@Fleura I don't think so. There would be traffic going through the bridge all the time.
