Saving Private Ryan was released in July of 1998 to critical acclaim. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon amount many other stars you certainly will recognize. The film is of course rated R due to the violence, war scenes, and language.
The film is praised as one if not the greatest war battle scenes in film history not only by critics but from veterans who survived D-Day. One of the first scenes of the landing at Omaha Beach was so realistic that veterans of the landing that were shown a prerelease had to get up to leave the theater.
The plot of the film is not a true story but based on real events. There was no real Private Ryan, but it was based on the real life Niland Brothers. Though there was no rescue mission and the last surviving Niland brother was transferred to and sent home.
Watching this if you watch closely, you will see a number of mistakes made in the movie. Some of the battle tactics in by Allies and German forces are just illogical. Ammunition in that era would not kill men submerged in water. Some of the German vehicles in the film were Soviet vehicles made to look like German vehicles, due to so few or no German vehicles of the time.
Things that they did get right overly outweigh the wrong. Like men would sink and drown try to land on D-Day because their equipment was to heavy. Most of the landing craft were authentic.
One particular scene was right and wrong at the same time. There is a scene where one sniper shoots through another sniper’s scope to kill him. Though there is an official story of this happening in combat, it was done by Marine GySgt Carlos Hathcock in Vietnam. It was not done in WWII.
If you have not had the chance to see this movie and are the least bit interested in war films, action films or just good films, I suggest you find it and watch it. It is well worth the 2 hours and 49 minutes. I would rate this film 4.99 stars out of 5, sorry cant give any film a perfect score.

I've seen the movie more than once. Omaha Beach - I can only imagine how it was for veterans to see that. Ah, I didn't realize the "mistakes" - I guess there would be a bit of artistic license used there. I'm not big on war movies, but I'd say this was definitely worth the watch.

Yeah, I dont think there are any movies without mistakes and in this case, there were the little mistakes and the fact that it was not supposed to be a true to life story so some of the changes and things were done purposely to make a good fill. Not to mention the soviet vehicles there's not a lot that could be done since there are not Tiger tanks to use in the film, they had to do something.

@Bensen32 I guess an expert or at least those who are familiar with these things can point out the mistakes in the details. For the rest of us it's just believable - works for the story anyway. This is why we can't believe all that we see in movies!
