Is chronic pain a true physcial condition or is it all in ones mind, like 67% of the doctor I have seen over the years have told me? Whats your opinion?

Chronic pain is as real as a broken arm.I know of someone who has RSD and her strength to fight it is incredible! She is a power of strength.Doctors are just now agreeing there is a thing called fibromyalgia. As soon as they open their eyes more, maybe they will be able to understand and treat patients better.

It is real, real, real. I am a chronic pain sufferer and have been for 10 years. There is much research yet to be done on this illness so one cannot say it is all in the head, like a lot of doctors insist on saying. There are so many different ways that people acquire chronic pain that there is no way of pinpointing a cause. In my case, I refer to fibromyalgia. It is an autoimmune disease as well as a neurological disease. In that case, you might want to say it's all in your head. So your brain isn't giving off the signals it should, or isn't releasing the proper chemicals.
In my case, there is one theory out there that I believe refers to me. I had mono when I was 17. I did a poll on a fibromyalgia board and found that 90% of the people there had mono at some point in their lives. The symptoms of mono mirror fibromyalgia. An infection is planted and lays dormant until something triggers the illness - a car accident, memories of childhood abuse, an abusive marriage, stress, childbirth. Yes, childbirth. I gave birth, got an infection, popped a stitch and had a colicky baby. If that isn't stress to the mind and body, I don't know what is. That baby is 10 now but I still have fibromyalgia. It will never ever truly go away - unless they can find a cure, which I doubt. They key is to manage the illness, not let the illness control you. Easier said than done, I know.

thanks you for your response, I have had RSD/CRPS for over 20 years and doctors can't decide whether or not I have it or if I am wanting attention, so they have told me that I shoudl forget my diagnosis and that my problem is only Chronic Pain nothing else which I know is false. So I hear you amd I completly understand the situation. thanks for the post

It's real for a lot of people but not for all people. I have fibromylgia. I have extreme muscle spasems and fevers created by it all and it can get so painful I don't want to get out of bed. I speak to lots of people who were "diagnosed" with fibromyalgia and I can tell you that I don't believe that half of them really have the illness. More like their doctors told them that to get them off their back. Chronic pain can me in the mind and what pain is real can be highted by the mind. I stay possitive and have much less problems then others and get a massage when needed and do relaxation exercises. So I am able to manage most of my pain.
