Our first hiccup at this house-sit

I’ve written about some of the challenges we’ve faced when house-sitting, and I’ve also said that I always expect to have a hiccup or two at each place. We had one of those hiccups today. There is a hen sitting on guinea fowl eggs with a guinea hen sharing nesting duties. Not really an ideal situation but they’re not our chooks (chickens). We didn’t expect the eggs to hatch out while we were here but when we went across this evening, we discovered the hen off the nest with 17 – I kid you not – 17 little guinea fowl chicks. We needed to catch the hen to lift her into a small pen which doesn’t have a gate. She is quite vicious and very intent on protecting her chicks. Luckily, we had gloves. She made her stance under some cupboards so was exceedingly difficult to extract. To cut a long story short, after a lot of trouble, we managed to put her into the pen but then we had 17 little chicks to try to catch. Last time we were here we had a slightly similar situation but the little chicks just squatted in a heap and we were able to catch them quite easily. This time, they were running in all directions. Some went charging off with the guinea hen; some went behind the small cage where we had no hope of getting them out and the rest were helter-skelter all over the place. Eventually we managed to catch them all and put them with the hen. We then headed home for a well-earned beer. Although it might be cold in the northern hemisphere, it’s hot here so a cold beer/shandy went down well. The photo was not taken at this place.

We did indeed. Little chicks can run surprisingly fast whereas us old folks are quite slow!

@JudyEv I was wondering why you should be doing this at all. Your plants will be missing you

I don't think we will be doing much more. It's starting to be hard work.

@allknowing I like being out in the country and it's helping out a friend. We don't really have enough to do in our unit. But I take your point about my plants. Hopefully the retic is working well.

Oh my goodness, you had a lot of exercise chasing the chicks. Luckily you have the habit to deal with animals.

@JudyEv I have the feeling that the owners are "cheating" about the chicks.

You are having a tough time with the hen and her chicks but I think you are enjoying your house sitting at the same time.

Yes, we always enjoy it and that's why we're here - to look after their animals for them.

It can certainly be difficult if they do not want to be caught! It sounds like you earned your shandy!

@MarieCoyle That's for sure. I think maybe the 63 indoor plants are easier than the animals.

It was really hot out there and difficult to get the hen into the pen. Once we had her shut up, it wasn't quite so bad.

It wasn't an easy task at all and the fact they could get through the netting made the task even harder.

That almost sounds like fun. Then again at my age I wouldn't want to be chasing chicks all over the place.

It would have been much easier if the hen hadn't been so protective. We needed to bend down to get her out from under a ledge and we were worried she'd get us in the eye. But we got there in the end.

These were quite fast for sure and they could dodge through the wire very easily and we'd have to go round through the gate then they'd dodge back again. But we got there in the end.

They look like bantam chicks really. Or feral chicks. Chicks that haven't been 'tampered with' tend to have camouflage colouring (brown with black streaks) such as in the photo but not so much white. I'll try to get a photo of the chicks but it's not much good taking photos through the netting and the hen is still sitting on them most of the time. They all get too upset if you fuss around them too much then the chicks get trodden on etc.

After we got it all sorted out, the owner said 'if it's all too hard, let the hen take her chance in the big yard'! Haha. Next time, we'll ring her first!
