It was a sad thing that Japan experienced a killer earthquake on January 1st. The killer earthquake's magnitude was 7.6 and affected the Noto Peninsula. There were five deaths and two injuries yesterday (January 4), but the death toll increased to more or less 100 and evacuated 100,000. It is not only that; a Japanese flight airline (JAL-516) collided with an airplane (A-350) and was engulfed in fire at Haneda Airport on January 2. There were no deaths on the passengersplane, but five people died on the Coast Guard plane. Have there ever been moments when you wanted to avoid the news? Image Credit: media.cnn.com

Yes, there have been times I avoided the news. The aftermath of 9/11 is a prime example. While I’m so sorry for any loss of life, I’m thankful that things, especially with the plane collision, weren’t worse. Over 370 people got out of that passenger jet alive, which is a miracle. The worst plane disaster in history was a similar incident, in the Canary Islands.

I prefer to read the news to be informed of what is happening in the world. It was not a good start for Japan, in Italy we think that leap years are unlucky years and this one is a leap year.

It sounds like it. I do hope that they can recover fast. I have been reading daily news with Japanese students since I started working with them.

@LadyDuck I found out that the coast guard plane did not have clearance to take off, went to the runway, and crashed into the passenger plane.

Since my Japanese students usually have daily news for their lessons, it is inevitable to read along with them.

No, I don't avoid news because I want to know what is happening locally and in other parts of the world.

I am glad that you are. During the peak of the pandemic, I never dared to watch or read any news about the coronavirus. I got tired of knowing what was happening around the globe. With this Japanese company, daily news is what they are using for learning materials online. Thus, it made me read news around the world lately.

That's a terrible earthquake. I hope more people will get help and there will be less damages in Japan. I still want to know more news. It doesn't matter it's sad or not. It is important for me to know what's happening in the world rather than knowing the fake news.

At some point, we still need to be vigilant to know the real facts about news, either online or offline. It is sad to say that so many infrastructures were damaged, and that includes their homes.

I agree. I think they are still rescuing people from the collapsed buildings in the affected areas. The tsunami is also what they are monitoring.
