Some People Are Just Oblivious

Do you ever run into people who firmly believe they are but sole occupants of the world? I mean, they ARE the only people on the planet in their minds and other people are simply imaginary things.
I went to the bank yesterday to use the ATM machine and there was a car ahead of me sitting next to the machine with her window rolled up. I imagined she was preparing to use the machine.
I sat there and waited. And waited. And waited. I saw her doing something. Maybe looking at her phone? I wasn't sure. At one point she fished something out of her console. And I waited. And waited. And waited.
I thought of giving her the horn. But that would be rude, wouldn't it?
Finally, after some time passed as I was waiting, and waiting, and waiting, she glanced into her rear-view mirror and saw I was there. She then put on her seatbelt and drove off.
She wasn't preparing to USE the machine. She'd already used it. And then just sat there doing God knows what after. Oblivious to the idea that anyone else might need to use it, or that any other person in the world possibly exists except her.
People like that have no business in public, and I will tell you, I should have blasted my horn at her. People like that grate me to no end.

I see that all the time at the grocery store. People who block the aisles with their shopping cart so no one else can get through, or they stand in front of the salad dressing section for 20 minutes because they can't decide which dressing to buy (although the have been buying the same dressing all their life). They are completely oblivious to the fact that there are dozens--if not hundreds--of other shoppers in the store.

@porwest I'm the same way. It's called spatial awareness...the ability to know what's going on around you, and the ability to know how your actions affect those around you. Like you, I make a point of being out of people's way.

@moffittjc Beyond anything, it's common courtesy. Or, at least, it is supposed to be common.

I'm always cognizant of people behind me. I don't like to make people wait. Have a good day.

@porwest On the other hand, when hubs or I use scooters in the grocery store, people block the aisles carrying on long, drawn-out conversations; and we have to say "Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me".

@LindaOHio Some days I wonder what the world has come to between all the scooters and people filling bins for curbside pickup I have to navigate around. lol
And let me tell you, some of those folks on the scooters shouldn't be driving let alone be on those damn scooters.

I have met some people like that during my life. You were being polite when you used the horn. I have to stop myself from going to them and telling them a piece of my mind.

I chose not to use the horn at all, although I should have. She certainly deserved it. I was in no hurry and I was curious how long it would take her to notice someone was behind her. She was definitely in her own little world.
Had two or more minutes passed she'd have definitely gotten the horn though.

I can't say I blame you. George and I used to run into those people at drive-thrus, weather it be for food or the bank or what have you. It's also common in parking lots, too. If the marbles aren't there they shouldn't go out in public. Theycould be a danger to themselves and others. She's lucky you weren't some idot who doesn't believe in traffic laws.

Whatever she may be doing, she needs to have some common sense that there is a public place and a public service to be used by people other than her. Probably, there needs to be some system in place so that people like her don't get to misuse it or waste other people's time.

@porwest There is only one problem with spikes coming up from the ground and slashing her tires 60 seconds after completing her transaction...she would still be there a LOT longer waiting for the tow truck to come and remove her from the spot. You would wind up being even more aggravated!
At one point my Mom had an MG T.F. car. It had a wimpy horn on it that if she used it people would totally ignore it. So my father managed to get ahold of an air horn and install it on the car. The responses to it were hysterical. At one point someone was blocking the line at a drive up window and my Mom was getting more and more agitated. Finally she hit the horn. The person blocking the line was in a normal size passenger car and the person driving it jumped and bumped their head in the roof. They, of course, pulled forward and Mom got up to the window. The passenger from the car blocking the window came back, mad as hell and started to tell Mom off. Apparently her blowing the horn frightened the driver of the car so badly that they wet their pants, and they had to go home so she could change. Mom didn't apologize and had a tough time to keep from laughing, but she laughed so hard as the person stalked off and we drove away. I did roll down my window and shouted "Next time when you finish with the drive up window, drive off!!"

You make it sound as if you were waiting for half an hour, but really, how long did you wait and why didn't you tap the horn to get her attention? Are you Canadian?

I have a lot of patience, but I think even I would have used the horn at some point in that situation. I would never sit there at a drive thru ATM to do anything except use that machine . . . I would have parked elsewhere to do any other business. But that person didn't . . . how pokey of her to not notice you were there waiting. I'm actually surprised you didn't honk at her sooner!

You could have used the horn gently to alert her.

@allknowing We call that a "horn tap." I probably wouldn't have laid on it. But yeah, a little horn tap may have done the trick.

I certainly would have given her the horn to jolt her out of her perfect little world, That was rude of her and should have moved her car right afterward,

I met such a person who kept talking on the phone in front of the ATM machine instead of using it. He was middle aged. An elderly person passed a derogatory remark in disgust. I think he was right in his place.

Thinking on your discussion, it could be that she fished out her lunch out of the console and started eating it. There are people that carry lunch with them and eat it while they are doing errands. My weakness would be a Starbucks coffee...but I still would move my vehicle so I wouldn't block anyone's way to the automatic whatever. Whether it's a motor vehicle or my broom!

@porwest I have a Keurig coffee maker and make my own coffee drinks, although I still do spring for a Starbucks on occasion. Especially during the summer months when it gets upwards of 110 degrees. When my neighbor gentleman was still with us, he would spring for one every week simply because I would do a lot of favors for him and not accept any payment for doing them. I tried the pumpkin drink and loved it. I had a couple during October and then got a bottle of pumpkin flavoring and started making my own. It wasn't quite the same but it was still good.
I don't eat something where I will block other people in a line. I'm also the kind of person where "IF" what I am buying at the store is going to take some time and there are people behind me that don't have a lot I let them go ahead of me. I'm not a "make 'em wait" kind of person. Also I don't hold with unloading your cart at the check out and then remembering one thing and going back to get that "one" item and holding up the line while you come back with 6 or 8 more items that you presumably forgot.

IF she is like my husband she was doing the subtraction in her register. Except he does not use ATM's, he used to do that at check outs when he wrote a check. Now we use debit card and I do 95% of the shopping.

Lots of people like this in the world. Speaking of customers, I don't know how many times I run into someone on their phone in the checkout lane who OBVIOUSLY can't chew gum and walk at the same time. I have a place for their phone, but I will go to jail if I attempt to put it there. lol

Some people think it is all about them don`t they?. I hate it when we are waiting at a busy petrol station and the last person to use the pump is sat in the car for ages before moving on .

. . . but I guess there's hardly any of that these days. Just a lot of entitled/unaware pokey people.
