Speach therapy went well.

We had a surprise visit from George's speach therapist. She called me around one, asking if she could stop by. Of course, I said yes because he needs that in order to eat and drink like he likes. If I don't have to restict his food, then he may be more tempted to eat it. As it was, he took his blood thinner in pudding again... so that's a win-win. He'd been sipping on thickened pepsi, so it was no surprise he didn't want to finish the whole thing. However, he's doing pretty good when you consider we're approaching month three down post-stroke. He's determined to get better.

I am glad he is continuing to improve. I hope he rests well at night and that you do as well.

@MarieCoyle Trust me, I do. Despite what a lot of people think, George is very independant. We hade a schedule and routine going, which seems to work well for us.

He's sleeping through the night. Which is both good and bad. Mostly because he wakes up soaked.

@kaylachan Oh, dear. I hope with all that you are doing, you have a chance to rest, Kayla.

So your have to restrict his food because he h has a hard time swallowing? My grandma had a stroke and she lost the use of one side. She wore a leg brace the rest of her life but eventually could do more with her arm. I don't remember her having a hard time speaking or eating.

Strokes are like fingerprints. Where the stroke occours in the brain determines the difficulty. George had a very severe and noticable facial droop on his left side, which compermised the swallow muscles on that side. When the hospital tried him on food, after about a week he asperated. So, we're taking things slow and working on his swallow.

@MarshaMusselman I wasn't aware of the droop, myself until EMS pointed it out and asked me about it. This was later confirmed by the hospital. It's corrected itself quite a bit since, because people are telling me it's improved.

@kaylachan good that you are going slow then. I think my father in law had the facial droop when he had a stroke while he was in his car. I don't remember whether he recognized something was wrong and pulled over or what. But his daughter could tell by the droop what had happened.

This is her second appointment with him, first where she wasn't pressed for time.
