A sure fire solution

You know how looters are stealing products and destroying businesses? Now stores are putting items behind locked glass cases. Can you imagine trying to find a Walmart employee to unlock the case for you? I have a novel suggestion that would solve a lot of this mess. Lock up criminals, not merchandise. If you arrest looters and theives and make them actually serve time in prison, you might not need to lock up sox and underwear. I need to buy some stock in Amazon. No locked up products there.

Oh, but you might offend the criminals if you lock them up. I agree with you, but certain political groups vehemently disagree with us. I hope common sense makes a comeback, don’t you?

I doubt that common sense has ever been extremely common, but I agree with you. We sure need more of it.

Amber, I think that extremists on "both sides" lack common sense. I know "Conservatives" who still think Trump "won" the 2020 election. I know "Liberals" who think white people commit more violent crime per capita than black people. If we have common goals, we have to accept truth and then work to solve problems to achieve those common goals. Extremists tend to put their heads in the sand and not acknowledge reality that doesn't suit their preconceptions. Psychologists call it "confirmation bias."

@TheHorse I’m just talking about criminals Vicki has mentioned here, not anything else. Of course election deniers lack sense, but you aren’t going to get any conservatives advocating for letting criminals loose (once again, Trump’s criminality is not what I’m talking about). Conservatives have their own problems, but being lenient on thieves is not one of them.

If no one steals the packages that Amazon sends to you, that is the best way to solve the problem.

I agree with you here. If we have to build more prisons, so be it. And those prisons should not be hi-lux places.

I guess the jails don't have room for all the looters and shop-lifters. Maybe just drop them on a deserted island somewhere - with their stolen goods.

We have the room. We have liberals who don't want to prosecute them and once they get there, want to make sure they are comfortable and well looked after. It's a literal joke the system we have today.

Gotta catch them first! The sad thing is if things are locked up you will have to pay more to purchase. I think Walmart needs to put more theft deterrents in place though..bit not locking up socks and underwear for heaven's sake.

And it's impossible to ever find an employee in Walmart. I'm not walking all over that huge store to buy a pair of sox.

Out here it's Walmart and Target. It's not even necessarily high priced items that are in the case and sometimes it is maddening to find someone to get these cases open. Seriously, there needs to be tougher consequences and enforcement of the laws. It is nuts how people think they can get away with everything . . . but sadly these days they ARE getting away with it.

I agree with you completely. But you have a state who is governed by a moron who believes people shouldn't be prosecuted for anything stolen from $950 and under. He signed it into law. So, the law now is stealing is fine as long as you don't take $951 worth of stuff. I'm sorry, you should be prosecuted for stealing period. No wonder stores out there are closing by the dozens. What idiots.

@1creekgirl The police in India are being cheated and robbed. Earlier thieves and robbers feared the police but because they have indulged with them for years now the police themselves are becoming victims of crimes.

This is what happens when you have soft DA's who release criminals without bail or charges. Another reason to vote all these liberals out of office. If there are no consequences to one's actions, why would they stop. And I don't blame the stores for doing this, they are in business to make a profit not give their items away for free.

You know, you said it PERFECTLY. To me this is just common sense. Make it so that the CRIMINALS are punished. Not everyone else. I think we are long past "let the time fit the crime." Let the TIME be such that it DETERS the crime. Increase prosecutions for theft, force restitution and make restitution such that it is MORE than the cost of the theft, and for Heaven's sake, make sure we have prosecutors doing their JOBS and putting people away for doing things that affect all of our lives in such a negative way. The ONLY reason this stuff happens is because there's virtually no consequence if you do this.

A friend of mind went to the Walmart here and called for help to get something in the lock up here. He waited for 45 minutes and when someone came. She did not have a key. Than after she went to get the key he waited ten more minutes and left to go some where else to get the item.

We have a problem here in the UK with shoplifters. Some shops put empty boxes on shelves and keep the product hidden at the back of the shop. This means that if a thief comes along they will only be stealing an empty box.

I've never been the victim of a porch pirate. I do know people who have, though. Many places I shop, have what I would call plexiglass flaps covering small items. These aren't locked up, but they make noise. You can see what's behind the flap. When you lift the handle on the flap to get your item (usually OTC meds, small personal items, etc.) the flap LOUDLY plays music or even sings a song. It's very startling. I realize it is there for a reason, as these small items are no doubt often stolen. Even though a person knows when they lift the flap there will be music, it's still somewhat of a surprise when you do it. I noticed the other day that Dollar General not far from my house has all of their body sprays/deodorants/toothpastes, etc. behind the counter, locked up in see-thru cases. How sad is it that people would steal deodorant and toothpaste? We live in a strange world.
