I've been practicing skies too.

As well as the two paintings I've been working on today, I've also been practicing skies. I took two of the sheets I'd previously covered in raw sienna and I drew a horizon line on both of them, slightly lower than half way down the page.
Then I took the first sheet and, following a demonstration in my book, I used a mix of cobalt blue and white and painted the sky in starting from the top.
Then I got some grey and painted in a cloud, making sure I put it in on the diagonal to make it look more realistic.
I did the same thing with the other sheet, but as I was doing the sky I added more white with each stroke so it got lighter as it went down the page. When I did the clouds on that one I did the grey darker and did more clouds, so it looked like a storm might be brewing!
What do you think of this sky?

Wow! It's nice to be compared to the old Dutch painters!
