I'm Getting Closer To A Dog
February 12, 2024 12:48pm CST
A few months back, I finished my orientation and mobility (O&M) training, certifying my proficiency in navigating with a long white cane. But I had to wait until I could get in to see my ophthalmologist before applying for a guide dog. Because he intentionally overbooked and my friend was waiting in her car for me, I got stressed out and forgot to pull out my application for his signature. But thankfully, my friend reminded me about it before we left. Still, instead of coming home with a signed application, I had to wait for them to mail it back. It arrived today, so I finally have it submitted. I await approval now for however long that will take. Freedom Guide Dogs said they are booked solid through fall, but I may get a dog sooner because I am only an hour and a half away (and they come to me, not the other way around). We shall see. Anyway, this starts the ball rolling.

Henry was born a feral barn cat and was around dogs there. He was also around Mom's dog, while I was taking care of her, while she (Mom) was dying. So, I think he'll be fine - maybe a bit put off since he has been an only pet (even though guide dogs aren't) for the past five years, but I am sure he'll be fine. He may even enjoy the dog's company, especially at night.
