An ideal drenching bottle

When I was young, getting a veterinarian out to look at a sick animal was beyond the means of most farmers. They would apply their own remedies or seek out a neighbour who might be known as good with sick animals. My father was a farmer and would occasionally drink beer but no-one that we knew drank wine. However, somehow we had acquired a tapered wine bottle like the one in the photo. It was highly valued as ideal for giving a sick cow or horse a drench. The long tapered neck made it easier to pour any medicine into the back of the throat. The drench would be made up and placed in the bottle, the horse or cow would be secured, preferably with its head held high and the drench poured down its throat. How times have changed.

I imagine it was a conveniente bottle to try to give the medicine to a cow or a horse. Times have changed for sure.

@JudyEv When I watch some old movies the "old world" seems so distant and different from our days.

@LadyDuck Some old movies look very stilted, don't they? And in some movies, everyone smokes non-stop!

@JudyEv They can..especially if you are at all creative, or can follow an idea.

Yes, that's true. And most things can have more than one use.

Whenever I see a really sturdy cardboard box, I can't help thinking how it would be a great box for a pet lamb.

Farmers had to be their own vets way back when.

Sure I read about this happening in one of the Vet books that were popular in the 70s

And did it mention patting a horse on the stomach with a shovel to try to shift sand? I have two old veterinary books but can't think what to do with them. I must go searching for a veterinary museum or somesuch.

I still look at big carboard boxed and think they'd be ideal for pet lambs. We used to put them in boxes in front of the fire at night.

It is hard to not throw out a good bottle of any kind. Never know when it will be useful.

This one would be especially good as it doesn't have any 'shoulders'.

Farmers needed to have all sorts of skills back then. So did their wives.

That would help. A large syringe works too as you can squirt it to the back

Vets were in very short supply in our district and mostly too expensive.
