Diapers Then and Now

I don't know what made me think of diapers but I just had some thoughts on the subject. My daughter was born in 1971. I had gotten 3-4 dozen cloth diapers from guests at my shower. I was a single parent so had little extra $$ at that time. I remember washing them and hanging them to dry about every other day. But when I did the money I would get her some disposable diapers. At that time they were like thin cardboard and pretty rigid. Not like they are today at all. They caused a lot of chafing so I had to have some sauve on hand all the time but her poor hiney. Do any of you remember those? The image is from my collection.

@celticeagle I'm sure my parents were thankful for that. It would've been one less thing to worry about.

Disposable diapers were better in the 80s. But I still used cloth at home

They came a long way in ten years. When my first grandchild was born they had nice disposable ones.

@celticeagle Yes they did. I had to watch my oldest close. He couldn't stay wet for long at all without a rash. So the disposable ones were a lot better when we were going somewhere as it kept the moisture away. You can't always change them right away when shopping

My daughters only used cloth diapers. I had to wash them by hand.

That's what I did too. I lived with her out in a trailer and washed them out by hand. Had plenty of room to hang them out. They'd dry pretty fast with the help of the breeze.

I had cloth diapers for all my kids. They came out with disposable when I had my first child, but they needed pins. As much as I preferred disposable diapers, cloth was better.

@celticeagle I only had the girl. I remember "potty" training her. It went really well until she discovered the cat box. I walked into the room where the litter box was and the cat was standing there, beside the box, looking very confused. The litter box was awash and from the look on his face you could tell he couldn't figure out how he managed to fill the box so full!!!! The litter box was full of liquid nearly to the top of the box with urine and his look was "I didn't drink that much so I would pee that much in the box!!!!" My daughter was standing there, proud as a peacock, and looked at me and stated "I used the litter box, I used the pee box!!!!!" And then she added "I didn't wet my pants either, I did really really good!!! I had to drain the box into the toilet so I could carry it out to the dumpster and empty the soaked litter into the trash, rinse it out, and take it back in and refill it. Then I had to try to explain to my daughter "WHY we didn't pee in the kitty litter box instead of the toilet." It took a little bit, but I finally got it through to her, and the cat was able to use the litter box again. He was really careful about just climbing into the litter box without checking to be sure that it wasn't awash like it had been earlier. My mom called that evening, and about wet her pants from laughing so hard when I told her about what her granddaughter had done. It was a relief when she was potty (and litter box) trained!!!!

Yes, my mother was constantly washing diapers. She would change my brother about every 5 seconds. :-( Have a good day.

I recall them. I had a son born in 1970, and they were sort of new. The price was affordable compared to today. Lol.

My daughter was born in 1971 and the disposables were okay. But, I think they were like like cardboard, not near like they are today.

I remember diapers in 1969 when my son was born. They were not as good as they are now.

I remember the disposables. My daughter was the kind of baby that would wet a little bit in the diaper and then throw a fit until I changed her. Disposables were way too expensive a luxury to even consider for her. I was well stocked with cloth diapers (I had about 6 or 8 dozen of them) and was thrilled to be able to wash them out and reuse them. Of course my husband wasn't much help, he changed he once and rinsed the diaper in the toilet, flushed the toilet to get the rest of the mess off, and then I heard him exclaim "OH MY GOD IT ATE IT!!!" I went racing into the bathroom and he was standing there with his fingers pinched together, looking down the toilet. I asked what ate what. He looked at me and informed me that the toilet ate the diaper when he flushed it. What I miss now days is diaper pins. I've been searching for them for months. They were so handy for my crafting. I would buy 5 or 6 dozen to use for my crocheting, knitting, and so many other crafts. I have been looking for them now for using on my teddy bears and pinning the ears to the neck of the bears and the head to the back so that they wouldn't get lost. No such luck. Regular safety pins don't work quite as well as they aren't built as sturdy and as large as diaper pins. I also will add that I remember saving a LOT of money using regular cloth diapers while my daughter was growing up, people thought I was odd, but it was a nice little nest egg that I accumulated from not using disposables.

Men are mostly useless in the diaper dept. I remember how lucky I was and stayed at my grandparent's a lot when my daughter was young. I worked and Grandma watched her for me. She'd use the cloth ones during the day and I'd use the disposables at night. I'd get my paycheck, and buy diapers, film, and a new outfit for her. Taking pictures of her in her new outfit was my hobby when she was little.
