2/22/24 - Update on My Husband

I had a telephone conference with some of the staff of the rehab facility yesterday. They brought me up-to-date on what is being done with my husband and also answered my questions. Physical therapy weighed my husband...he has lost 30 pounds in 3 weeks. Totally not acceptable. They will be feeding him a pureed diet since he seems to be having trouble swallowing.
I mentioned that he needs therapy for his arm and hand strength since he can't pick up and hold a cup or silverware. He also needs his bed to be raised in the head area as he can't sleep flat on his back. Apparently we are looking at a more long term stay as they mentioned that there is a limit to how many days he can stay before I start paying big $$$. I remember when my FIL was in a nursing home back in 2000. It was $5,000 a month back then.
Thank you for your continued concern, prayers and thoughts. You are all good friends.

Please mention to them that he’s a veteran, and ask if they can get the VA involved.

Here the government kicks in for a stay in a nursing home, the rest or retirement homes cost and my mother was paying that exact number back in 2022 when she passed away in the rest home.
I think that this recommendation may get him a better bed and out of the cot that you compared it to.
They should be able to direct you for assistance, they have to aware of this for other residents, it is their job to do that for you.

Are they sure that your husband did not suffer a mild stroke and the doctors at the hospital missed to notice this? I see all the symptoms of a stroke here, his hand is not strong, he cannot swallow and he cannot speak clearly. May be he could be helped for a longer time at a rehab if this is the case.

They took a CT scan and MRI of his brain and assured me that it wasn't a stroke. He did have a little brain atrophy though.

Right, and for that kind of money they should get quality care! But they do not. I went round and round with the nursing home my mother was in. Never got reimbursed for her stolen items either. It's a shame they treat their patients this way and have staff that steal from patients.

You're very welcome. They have sent me paperwork to apply for Medicaid. I don't see how we would qualify; but they are insisting....

I am sorry to hear about all of that....I wish I knew more to say. I never was good at this kind of stuff...so hopefully others will be of more help.

@LindaOHio Well I just don't have much to offer in helping others. Yeah I can listen, but that is about it...

Here we can buy or rent hospital beds. In those facilities you mention, people should have them so that they are more comfortable. I hopw everything turns out for the best

I hope they do good now that you have talked to them. It does sound like he will have to be there longer than insurance will cover. The one I had dad in was 6000 a month. It is extremely expensive.

@LindaOHio If he would be there very long they would have the right to take your house after you are both gone. I know they wanted me to start dads paperwork for it because it can take a few months to get done. But I knew we were down to weeks at that time for dad. The home dad was in had someone that could help me with it.

They want us to apply for Medicaid. I don't see how that's possible.

@wolfgirl569 They also want me to fill out a paper that puts our assets in trust. This sounds very dangerous to me. I would need a lawyer to look at it.

@LindaOHio Hopefully there is a number you can ring. If it's not the right place, perhaps they can point you in the right direction.

They should be raising the head side portion of his bed without your telling them. He needs some physiotherapy for his hands I think. My prayers for him remains.

I hope you can get the bills totally covered $5000 a month is horrible! Sad that was how things were when you father in law was in.
They need to be feeding your husband if he isn’t able to do it well himself. That is really bad he has lost 30 pounds. If he was overweight then eating healthy could be why but I really don’t think that sounds like the case here.
