Our Pastor Steve Speight came round to see us this morning around 11:00am. His wife Jane was going to come round too, but when she learned what time he was coming she realised she couldn't because she had to go and get some papers sorted because her dad Frank has just gone into a Dementia care home and needed to finalise the paperwork for that, and they've also got to sell the apartment that he used to live in with his late wife Lorna who died late last year. And it's Jane's birthday today aswell. When he came in I was just finishing replying to my last notification on MyLot and he asked me what I was doing. You doing anything interesting on there? he asked and I told him I was talking to friends from all over the world, on Facebook, Twitter and MyLot. He said he'd never heard of MyLot, so I told him all about it. My Mum made a cup of tea for herself, my step-dad and Steve, but I didn't want one because I'd only recently had one with my breakfast. She also brought out some biscuits and cake. It seems Steve wasn't coming for any particular reason, just for a chat. His wife's just retired from being a dentist so he was talking about retirement. He's 64, he'll be 65 next year, but he says he doesn't want to retire quite yet. He doesn't know what he'd do if he did retire. He says he might retire when he's 67-68. But he's been thinking about it and thinking about how he'd do it when the time comes. He's hoping to transition someone to the top job slowly, easing them into the job while he slowly steps back. But not yet. We were watching the end of Animal Park, Homes Under the Hammer and the start of The Joy of Painting. Steve was talking about his dogs, where he likes to walk them, and the fact they wave at us every time they walk passed our house! We talked about other stuff aswell. Before he went he read a psalm and prayed. Then Mum gave him some of the left over cake to take home for Jane. What are you lot getting up to today? I hope you are all well. Have a nice day.

That sounds like such a good visit! My dad was talking about when he’ll retire from pastoring just yesterday. He is 68 (will be 69 in June), and wants to retire when he’s 73. However, he thinks he might end up just going one more year because he never wants to “wear out his welcome”. I told him I didn’t think the congregation would want him to retire, and that the associate pastor can make people go to sleep when he speaks. Of course, he’ll pay more attention to what God tells him to do, not me.

Thank you very much, yes it was. I don't think your Dad will wear out his welcome. And I agree with you that the congregation wouldn't want him to retire. You made me laugh when you said the associate Pastor can make people go to sleep when he speaks! I've know people like that! But yes, ofcause he should listen to what God tells him to do.

My friend didn't retire till she was around 70. She was worried that she'd be bored but now that she has left work, she is having a great time.

She obviously enjoyed her work when she was there. There are lots of things you can do when you retire.

@sharonelton It didn't. Surgery was aborted in the OR when his blood pressure dropped and his heart rate was too high. Being transported to Cleveland Clinic to have the surgery done there.
