Day 50 – Slavery Exodus 2:1 A man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was a beautiful child, she hid him for three months. 3 When she could no longer hide him, she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 His sister stood far off, to know what would be done to him. 5 Then the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river. Her maidens walked along the riverside; and when she saw the ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. 6 When she had opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby wept. She had compassion on him, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse for you from the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So, the maiden went and called the child’s mother. 9 Then Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So, the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 The child grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She called his name Moses, saying, “Because I drew him out of the water.” 11 Now it happened in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brethren and looked at their burdens. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 He looked this way and that way, and when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 When he went out the second day, behold, two Hebrew men were fighting, and he said to the one who did the wrong, “Why are you striking your companion?” 14 Then he said, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Moses feared and said, “Surely this thing is known!” 15 When Pharaoh heard of this matter, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well. 16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters. They came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 Then the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them and watered their flock. 18 When they came to Reuel their father, he said, “How is it that you have come so soon today?” 19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and he also drew enough water for us and watered the flock.” 20 He said to his daughters, “Where is he? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.” 21 Then Moses was content to live with the man, and he gave Zipporah his daughter to Moses. 22 She bore him a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land.” 23 Now it happened in the process of time that the king of Egypt died. Then the children of Israel groaned because of the bondage, and they cried out; and their cry came up to God (Elohiym) because of the bondage. 24 God (Elohiym) heard their groaning, and God (Elohiym) remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 25 God (Elohiym) looked upon the children of Israel, and God (Elohiym) acknowledged them. God’s name: Elohiym – Mighty God Yeshuwa – Jesus – Hebrew Iesous – Jesus – Greek God’s character: Compassion Mashiyach – Messiah, Savior Christos – Messiah, Savior – Greek Lord – Master When you face trouble and hardship, you want someone to acknowledge you and take compassion on your situation. Israel has been in Egypt since the great famine when Joseph brought his family to Egypt to keep them alive. They were in Egypt for 210 years. From the website Chabad.org: 20 Facts Every Jew Should Know The Egyptian Exile lasted 210 years. God gave Abraham a promise that his seed would live in the land of Egypt for 400 years. The Bible states they lived in Egypt for 430 years. However With the list of generations found in Exodus 6, the time Israel was in Egypt becomes an impossibility. The number of years, 400, still applies as it was exactly 400 years after the birth of Isaac when Israel left Egypt. So does the number 430 because Isaac was born 30 years after God promised Abraham a son. The Jewish People Were Slaves in Egypt for 116 years. The Egyptians enslaved Israel after the last of Jacob’s sons died. Levi was 137 years old when he died. He was 43 when he left Canaan with his father, Jacob and entered Egypt. This brings the total number of years of slavery to 116. Now, we come to today’s Scripture. Elohiym heard Israel’s groaning and remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. A son was born to the descendant of Levi and hidden among the bulrushes because the king of Egypt decreed that all male children should die. The mother of the newborn infant sent her daughter to watch what would become of the infant. When she saw Pharaoh’s daughter take him from the bulrushes, she came forward and offered the services of nurse for the infant and upon agreement, sent for the child’s mother who nursed him before giving him back to Pharaoh’s daughter, who named him Moses. Moses knew he belonged to the children of Israel. He killed an Egyptian because of his harsh treatment to one of his people. When he learned from his people that they knew he killed and Egyptian, he fled to Midian because Pharaoh wanted to kill him. While Moses was in Midian, Elohiym heard the cry of His people and had compassion for them because of their harsh enslavement. Most people are familiar with the story of Moses. Hollywood has made movies about his life with some embellishment, but still the truth is there among the fiction. Scholars have written exposés about Moses’ life and what he accomplished with Elohiym’s help. There is much confusion about the timeline Israel was in Egypt with so many accounts. One fact remains constant: Israel was in Egypt, and they left with Moses leading them under Elohiym’s guidance. At the end of today’s Scripture, Moses is on the threshold of what Elohiym will do for His people. Elohiym heard their cry and remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. You were a lot like the children of Israel, in bondage to sin. Satan had you bound to his will until you accepted Yeshuwa as your Mashiyach and Lord. Then Elohiym delivered you from the hold Satan had over you and you found freedom in Iesous Christos. Does Satan still have a hold over you? Have you accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord? You don’t need to live in slavery to Satan when Jesus set you free through His death, burial, and resurrection. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for freeing me from slavery to Satan. Thank you that I am Your child and can call You Father. Let me walk in freedom as I let Satan know he no longer has a hold over my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
