Originally the producers of the Ghostbusters movie wanted Huey Lewis to write the theme song, but he had other engagements and was not available to do it. After some searching around, they finally decided to hire Ray Parker, Jr. to write a song for them.
They told him, "We want something like Huey Lewis would write."
So, he wrote the song, turned it in, they loved it, he recorded it and the rest was history.
Kind of.
Huey Lewis heard the song and immediately recognized that the Ghostbusters theme sounded almost identical to his song, "I Want a New Drug," and so he decided to sue Ray Parker, Jr.
The courts agreed Ray Parker, Jr. essentially copied Huey Lewis' song and Lewis got a writing credit and collected a portion of royalties from every copy of the song sold.

Well, he was only doing what he was told. They said they wanted a Huey Lewis song, and so they got one. Sort of.

I wonder if he knew what he was doing? If he did, I'm glad Lewis won.

Huey was the right guy to go to for a hit theme song. His song "Power of Love" was a great addition to the movie "Back to the Future." And he got to play a music talent judge in the film. Alright Huey!

So, in the end, Huey Lewis wrote the song, since Ray Parker, Jr. stole his work. It's good the courts decided in Huey Lewis' favor, and he receives royalties from the Ghostbuster's theme.
