Social Media:I don't understand Reddit

I recently finished an article, which I wanted to share on social media to get more views. I shared on Facebook as that's my main social media. I shared on Twitter (I am still not entirely sure how that works or the point of it, but I do know what I can post and how to do it). I have also shared on LinkedIn. I don't really use that myself as I don't feel it's something really relevant to me but, again, I know how to use it. I started using Reddit a few years ago because I thought I might get more views on things if I shared there. I set up something, thought that I'd got a lot of extra views from there so shared again. It didn't seem to make a lot of difference to my views. Some of my Reddit posts were declined/removed for reasons I didn't understand despite my attempts to follow the rules. I removed myself from Reddit but then gave it another go. Until recently, I'd forgotten about it. I thought I'd share my recent article there. I then remembered why I stopped using the site. There are so many different threads and channels (some with the same names) with different rules for each one. It's hard to work out where to put things, it's difficult to navigate, and it looked like my post was declined for not following rules (no indication as to what those rules were or how I'd not followed them). I really don't understand why Reddit seems so popular. I have been told that Facebook is for old people now. It was my youngest son who told me that, although he does use it himself. He prefers Discord but, although I am on it, I'm apparently way too old to be learning all of that as well I think I'll stick with what I know! Do you have a preferred social media platform? Or one you really don't get on with? If you share your work, where do you prefer to do that and which place(s) have you found lead to better engagement (assuming that's the purpose of sharing)?

I've never been on the Reddit site. I used to share my writing on Twitter and Facebook. I only frequent Facebook and MyLot these days.

I mainly share on Twitter because there's a button for it on the site where I write. If not for that, I'd most likely also forget that!

@pumpkinjam If you don't mind my asking, where are you writing? Most of the good sites here have gone under.

@LindaOHio I write on Vocal Media (if you want to find me there, I am Sapphire M. Ravenclaw). I like it but it's not got so much of the social element as some of the older ones, although you can choose to turn comments on or off for each post. I do have a blog on WordPress and a poetry blog on Blogger, but I don't post on those often any more.

I must be old - I'm a Facebook person, although I don't really participate there anymore. My kids use Discord - I can't bother. My son finds stuff "about" Reddit - so I know about Reddit through him - but I have read stuff there at times for whatever reason. I am just DONE with social media . . . not into it like I used to be - I don't care to share much anymore. But if I were to have a business, I'll use any of them as a marketing tool if need be - I'm just not there yet .

I don't think I'm old but, I guess, 40something is old to an 18 year old I used to use social media (mainly Facebook) all the time. I'd be updating my status sometimes several times a day! Now, I still use it but (apart from sharing work) more to keep in touch with far away people and as somewhere to store my photos!

@pumpkinjam Then for me who is 50something, I'm old-er . That was me at one time on FB. I loved it. Now it's a love/hate thing. I'm more of a lurker there these days . . . I used to share a lot of things, but in recent years I've just wanted to keep things private. Now I'm even thinking to delete photos there.

@pumpkinjam We have a lot of digital photos too - yah that would be nuts (and expensive) to print them all. We put ours on an external drive or two . . . but I don't even know where Hubby put them . I'll have to look into these sites where we could keep them all . . . but a part of me is afraid of AI getting a hold of 'em.

What is Discord? I don't share any more, I have accounts but I am not using them so much now.

Honestly, I don't know much about Discord. I think it's largely a social media space for gamers. My son often uses it to connect with other people to make shared content. I went on it to see something my son had done on there but otherwise don't use it.

In what way? Are you active on there as in writing posts or do you go for advice, etc? How do you know where to look/which groups and threads to use and how to find them?

@pumpkinjam I browse it, post, and interact much the same as I would at any site, sharing experiences that you can't share for instance here.

I'm sorry Reddit doesn't work for you. I don't use it. My daughter told me to use Instagram. I signed up but I have yet to post there.

I've never used Instagram either. I feel that's more for younger people

I really don't use social media platforms. I may read info from some of them like X if it interests me, but I've noticed a lot of comments can be nasty or insulting if there is a difference of opinion. I'd rather not get into a back and forth with strangers.

I have no interest in arguing with strangers. I wonder if that has anything to do with my own social media preference of choice. I'll follow groups and have occasional conversations with strangers about similar interests. Mainly, though, apart from sharing links to my work, I use social media for keeping in touch with people I know.
