Back in the 50s and 60s kids were respectful of their parents and taught the Golden Rule among other things. Kids had rules and were expected to act in a certain way. Kids of that time listened to their parents and did as they were told. There was respect and ethical behavior.
In the 70s and 80s, these things became more lax as both parents began to work outside of the home. Divorce became popular and many single mothers trying to raise kids on their own. The term "latchkey" came into use about this time. This meant that a lot of kids were home after school with no parents. They let themselves in the door of their home with a 'latch key'. Kids began sneaking out and going against the rules that had been set down for them.
In the 90s and into the 2000s kids had become disrespectful and troubled teens rose like a beacon. School shootings started and soon became the norm in our country. If this violence wasn't an extreme plea for attention I don't know what it was at all. Kids were losing big time. Why do think kids join gangs? For that feeling of family.

Kids need parenting. They need hands-on care. They need to still have their parents in their lives. It seems like the kids and the parents have gone their separate ways. Alternate universes even. No longer do parents even seem to take parenting seriously. Parents seem anxious to get rid of their kids. Send them to college or kick them out of the house.
To me, kids and parents make up a family unit. This is a forever thing. They need to be together until college and time for the kids to get out on their own. They have been taught what a family unit is, how to govern their own lives, and, how to treat other human beings. Ethics, honesty, and integrity are taught by being good role models. Showing love, respect, and consideration on a daily basis. They can't just learn these things on their own.
These kids are the ones who are going to be taking over our country. They will be leading corporations, politics, education, foreign policy, etc.
What are your thoughts on this issue?

It is a shame that kids today even though I should not paint all of them as villains since what I know about persons who used to be my neighbors are saying that the grandparents are raising the children these days instead of the parents.

There was no such thing as misbehaving in our household! If you did, you faced the consequences. I agree with everything you said.

Oh, yes. My grandmother was very strict. I came home being switched more than once.

My parents were immigrants having gone through WW II. I was a very late in life baby for them. I had a nanny for a while and later a woman looked after me when needed. My parents made sure they were a prominent part of my life, that I had everything I needed, and I felt very loved and cared for. I was glad to grow up before technology because that helped develop my imagination which in turn helped with my writing skills, I was an obedient and caring child and knew how to behave, In turn I had all the love I needed and was happy,

I feel the same way. Childhood without technology was a great thing. I used to use a broomstick for my horse and had a wagon I took everywhere.
