My first time was this afternoon.

I remember years ago my first mother-in-law would periodically have to relight the pilot light to her hot water heater. It involved matches, or a twist of paper to ignite the gas with. Same in my first marriage. Hubby twisted the paper, pressed the gas button and hoped it would take. Our current hot water heater has an electronic ignition. I did not even know the difference. My pilot light went out. The tank is in a drafty place. Bob does not get up and down well, and also could not remember all the details. He tried. I got my trusty flashlight so I could read the directions. Then removed "the door" to see the view glass. I saw nothing. Pressed the gas button in, turned it to pilot, pressed and held, while also holding the igniter button. Pretty soon there was a click, a little green light started flashing, and I could hear the heater kicking on. That was my first time to light a hot water heater. I did not realize how easy it had become or I would have done it this morning. Hardest part was getting back up after doing it. When was your first time? Or have you ever?

My first time to light a hot water heater was in 1971, when I got married.

I have seen others do it. I just do not think I have had to. Usually I am standing by, though.

@GardenGerty We had a gas heater, if we were not home for a few days I turned it off, so I had to light it when back home.

My hot water heater hasn’t worked in nine years. After four times of them trying to fix it, when it clearly just needs to be replaced, I gave up, and take cold showers. It’s not bad in the summer at all. I’m glad you fixed yours!

@GardenGerty I know. I like to think it makes for a good story for the imaginary book I’ll write someday.

Usually the problem is beyond just lighting the pilot. I've never done it. We've always had to call someone out to fix the problem. I'm glad you were able to light the pilot! Have a good day.
