Grey Hair

I am still, at the age of 72, unsure whether I want to let my hair go completely grey. There is grey throughout the brown and I even have a patch of whitish grey on one side. My mother had salt and pepper-colored hair up until her passing. I worked with a young woman in her 20s once that had died her hair grey. I thought that was weird. Some grey looks good but I am just unsure whether I like it on me. At some point, I know I will just have to have it. What do you think of it?

Several summers ago, my hair went from it's natural red hue to white. It happened very fast, it just...turned white. My Dad's did that too, but he was a lot younger than I was when it happened. I made the decision not to color it. One big reason is that I am allergic to so many chemicals, and chemicals are what hair color is made of. My hair is very fine, like baby hair, so I didn't want to turn it in to a broken up mess. The other reason was...who was I fooling, anyway, if I colored it? Me? Not hardly. Everyone knew my hair had turned white quickly. But the biggest reason was what a friend did. Her hair turned gray and she colored it bright blonde. (She had dark blonde hair before it turned). She is 66 years old, and at that age of course she has a 66 year old face. It just didn't go with bright blonde hair that you would think of a young woman having. She doesn't want to look old. But now she does, because her hair just doesn't go with her face.
I am not saying that is the case for everyone, but it certainly is for her.

That's different. My hair turned white in one patch and the rest is just doing the grey thing. Too bad your friend made that decision. Some women just can't let it go grey.

It was just not a good look. Of course, I never told her that, but she told me her daughter told her she looked ridiculous, and she made an appointment to fix it. She finally did let it go gray. Somehow that fakey blonde color just made her look really bad.

@MarieCoyle .......It's good her daughter had some clout with her mom and she would listen to her. Natural blondes are attractive but when it isn't it looks pretty weird.

I think it's completely natural to have mixed feelings about letting your hair go grey. It's a personal choice that ultimately comes down to what makes you feel comfortable and confident. Some people embrace their grey hair as a symbol of wisdom and experience, while others prefer to maintain their natural color or dye their hair. I am soon turning 40 and seeing some strands of white hair. At first, I was upset with it but I don't want to dye my hair because I have heard that doing it has its disadvantages so I just let those white strands.

Yes, I suppose it is natural. I screeched when I saw my first grey hair. I'm getting used to it now.

@annierose ........I was enjoying the single life at that time and didn't want to deal with grey then. I'm in my early 70s so I really need to be able to cope with grey hair about now.

@celticeagle It's quite a journey, isn't it? Getting used to the changes our hair goes through can take some time, but it's all part of embracing who we are at every stage of life. It's great that you're adjusting to it!

I find it odd that young ladies who are in the sports world dye their silver since they are fans of the Storm character of the X Men.

@celticeagle In the case of Jade Cargill who is a female wrestler it is her right to play the Storm character in her profession. In the case of basketball player A' Ja Wilson I guess she likes the Storm character as well even though I do not know her that well.

The first thing I did when I retired on disability was let my hair grow out. Not having to use that awful dye was great; and my hair is a very silvery gray which I like. Have a good day and holiday.

Glad you like yours. I wish mine would just turn and get it over with. I won't dye it but I don't like it.

I have allowed my hair to go grey. All sorts of grey and silver. I like it. I am letting it grow long, which is contrary to what docile old ladies do, but it is happening.

Yeh, mine is doing that too it's just that one part of it isn't looking so grey. Hope it hurries and turns.

I think color with a mixture of grey is nice. Mine is salt and pepper.

I have the salt and pepper look . . . I never hid the greys and now it's just that way. I don't have to deal with or pay for coloring - never have to worry about "roots" - I'm pretty happy I don't have to think about stuff like that. I do think the right haircut/style helps with the overall look.

I agree about the haircut and style. I'm still not sure what I am going to do with mine.

After I moved to Florida I decided to not spend money on hair color anymore, I have my mom's and grandma's genes so I figured my hair would not go gray but white, I have not been coloring my hair now for six years and I have a white spot in my bangs but the rest of my hair has become the mousy brown color of my childhood, You have to deiced how you would like it and like for me perhaps it won't go gray all at once, I love the idea of looking similar to Grandmama Addams I have always been a little on the unusual side

If mine grows to look like my grandmother I won't mind. I don't want salt and pepper hair.

My Mom was probably in her 80s before she quit dying her hair brown-red and let it go. Still had it permed about twice a month. I'm not fashion conscious. IF my hair doesn't totally thin out to baldness I will let it go and have let it go into streaks of white gray.

Sounds like a plan. I'm not real fashion-conscious either. I just don't like the way the grey is moving in on the brown in some parts.

@celticeagle Years ago my daughter commented that I had white streaks in my blonde- kind of irritated me cause she only sees me about every 7 to 8 years. She would have the right to say something if she bothered to show up more often.

I doubt I will. Grey is hard to color over and I am too old to be messing with it.
