Day 140 – Leadership
Numbers 17:1 JEHOVAH spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and get from them a rod from each father’s house, every leader according to their fathers’ houses—twelve rods. Write each man’s name on his rod. 3 You will write Aaron’s name on the rod of Levi. For there will be one rod for the head of each father’s house. 4 Then you will place them in the tabernacle of meeting before the Testimony, where I meet with you. 5 It will happen that the rod of the man whom I choose will blossom; thus, I will rid Myself of the complaints of the children of Israel, which they make against you.”
6 Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and each of their leaders gave him a rod apiece, for each leader according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.
7 Moses placed the rods before JEHOVAH in the tabernacle of witness.
8 Now it happened on the next day Moses went into the tabernacle of witness, and behold, the rod of Aaron, of the house of Levi, had sprouted and put forth buds, had produced blossoms and yielded ripe almonds.
9 Then Moses brought out all the rods from before JEHOVAH to the children of Israel; and they looked, and each man took his rod.
10 JEHOVAH said to Moses, “Bring Aaron’s rod back before the Testimony, to be kept as a sign against the rebels, that you may put their complaints away from Me, lest they die.”
11 Thus did Moses; just as JEHOVAH had commanded him, so he did.
12 The children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, “Surely, we die, we perish, we all perish! 13 Whoever even comes near the tabernacle of JEHOVAH must die. Will we die?”
God’s name:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
God’s Character:
Holy
People always question leadership. Especially when they believe someone else can do a better job. They question their credentials, motives, their past, present, and future. They want to make certain the right person leads them.
From the moment Israel left Egypt, the people complained about Moses and Aaron and their leadership over them. JEHOVAH put an end to the discussion. He told them to bring a rod from each tribe to the tabernacle. He told them the rod that budded was the person He chose to do His work in the tabernacle. When the people did as Moses requested, they saw Aaron’s rod not only budded, but it also blossomed and bore fruit. When they saw the undeniable proof in Aaron’s rod, they became fearful of death. JEHOVAH also told Moses to keep the rod before the Testimony as a sign He chose Aaron.
Do you question the leadership in your congregation? Do you know JEHOVAH placed you in that congregation? If so, you are not to murmur or complain about the leadership of the congregation you sit under. When you do, you come against JEHOVAH’S anointed. Bring your concerns to JEHOVAH in prayer. Talk to your minister. Let him know your concerns. Don’t make unfounded accusations against him. He could tell you to leave if you come against him publicly as the Israelites did against Moses and Aaron. Israel didn’t have a choice in their leadership because JEHOVAH appointed them. They also had nowhere else to go because JEHOVAH chose them as His people and told them He would lead them through Moses and Aaron. If JEHOVAH placed you in the congregation, you don’t have a choice either. It’s where JEHOVAH wants you. Your responsibility in the congregation is to pray for your leadership that they would also listen to JEHOVAH and be obedient to Him.
Complaining brings dissension and trouble to the body. Pray. Lift the leadership in prayer and talk to him privately. When you do, you will have a better understanding of what JEHOVAH is doing through him.
Let’s pray: Father, I don’t always understand what the leadership does in my congregation. Help me pray for the leadership and let them know I will not come against their authority in the body. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
