Day 145 – Obstacles
Numbers 20:14 Now Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. “Thus says your brother Israel, ‘You know the hardship that has befallen us, 15 how our fathers went down to Egypt, and we dwelt in Egypt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers. 16 When we cried out to JEHOVAH, He heard our voice and sent the Malak and brought us up out of Egypt; now here we are in Kadesh, a city on the edge of your border. 17 Please let us pass through your country. We will not pass through fields or vineyards, nor will we drink water from wells; we will go along the King’s Highway; we will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left until we have passed through your territory.’”
18 Then Edom said to him, “You will not pass through my land, lest I come out against you with the sword.”
19 The children of Israel said to him, “We will go by the Highway, and if I or my livestock drink any of your water, then I will pay for it; let me only pass through on foot, nothing more.”
20 Then he said, “You will not pass through.” Edom came out against them with many men and with a strong hand.
21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his territory; so, Israel turned away from him.
God’s names:
JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal
Malak – Messenger, Angel, God
Christos – Anointed One, Messiah
Iesous – Jesus
God’s character:
Guide
Before people travel, they consult a road map to find the best way to get to their destination. If the trip is long enough, they will make reservations at hotels or campgrounds along the way. When they start their journey, they use a GPS to guide them. However, they don’t know about the obstacles they will encounter along the way.
JEHOVAH was Israel’s road map. His Malak was their GPS to get them to the Promised Land. The road wasn’t easy as they encountered many obstacles in their journey. Along the way they came to Edom and asked permission to travel through the country, but Edom refused and came against them.
When JEHOVAH tells you to go to a certain place, He doesn’t promise there won’t be obstacles. Missionaries often encounter opposition with the possibility of death. Many missionaries died because of opposition to the gospel.
Paul’s missionary journey was filled with hardship. Yet he persevered for the gospel.
2 Corinthians 11:22 Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? So am I.
23 Are they ministers of Christos? —I speak as a fool—I am more: in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequently, in deaths often.
24 From the Jews five times I received forty stripes minus one.
25 Three times I was beaten with rods; once I was stoned; three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I have been in the deep; 26 in journeys often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils of my own countrymen, in perils of the Gentiles, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; 27 in weariness and toil, in sleeplessness often, in hunger and thirst, in fasting often, in cold and nakedness— 28 besides the other things, what comes upon me daily: my deep concern for the churches.
29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to stumble, and I do not burn with indignation?
30 If I must boast, I will boast about the things which concern my infirmity.
Paul never quit spreading the gospel. Even in prison, he sent letters to the churches to encourage them. In the end, Emperor Nero beheaded him for the gospel of Iesous Christos.
What are you willing to do for the gospel? What obstacles face you? Your guide is JEHOVAH. His GPS and Malak is Iesous Christos. Only JEHOVAH knows the obstacles you face for Him. Your duty is to pray and go. Let Him lead.
Let’s pray: Father, You are my GPS in life. I don’t know the way, but You do. I don’t know what I will encounter, but you do. You promised never to leave me or forsake me along my journey. Help me rely on You to get me through this journey of life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Yes, Moses detoured around Edom, after this. God always knows the best ways for us to go, and we should not try to go it alone without our consulting God first. Edom was eventually punished by God.
