Surely, You Can't Be Serious

"And don't call me Shirley." Of course, that's the joke, right? The ever-famous line from the movie, "Airplane." And a brilliant play on words at that. There are a lot of people out there who scratch their heads how it is possible with so much negative coverage of Trump that he just grows and grows in support. What they miss is the brilliance that Trump delivers when he says things he knows the media will latch onto. "I don't care about you. I just want your vote," Trump says with a smile and a chuckle. And the next thing you know it's all over the news. Just that line. And a circle of pundits and commentators then try to dissect it and make it seem like it's something he actually said in the context of being serious. "I have enough votes already. I don't need your vote," Trump says and once again the media stumbles over themselves to put that onto the news reels and start talking about it. The normal viewer says, "Hey wait a minute. That makes no sense. Why would he say that? Doesn't he want to win the election?" What does a normal person do when they want to know more? They go and see the whole speech or the whole rally. Trump is literally sending his enemies right into his lair through the media, but of course the media doesn't realize it. They are too wrapped up in telling the story and working hard to make you believe it. What happens is the normal person goes to the full speech and waits. They wait to hear all the crazy things Trump will say to confirm he's nuts and off his rocker and unfit to lead. But instead, they hear something else entirely. They hear about his love of country. They hear about how great America is, and how great it can be. They hear about the importance of the Constitution and lessons learned from bad periods in our history. In a nutshell, they hear the real Trump message. They hear his actual words. And it's not long after that they make an important discovery. The media is lying. The media is full of crap. He's not the evil, racist, homophobe misogynist he's been portrayed as. When Trump offers these little soundbites, he knows what he's doing. He makes them not make sense on purpose. Because that forces normal people to be drawn in to what else he says. His support grows because he can brilliantly lead his enemies over to his side and change their minds once they hear the real message. In the end, no matter how much the media tries to portray Trump's jokes as something serious, Trump always gets the last laugh. And in November, he'll deliver the final punchline.

Interesting article. But I didn't really learn anything that cannot be inferred from his speeches. I'm just glad that someone who worked so closely with him can confirm what most of us have to infer from hearing him speak. His "dictator for a day" comment can be dismissed as him shooting from the hip.

@TheHorse His dictator for a day comment can be dismissed as him simply joking, because he was VERY clear about his answer. "I want to drill, baby, drill and secure the border. Then I won't be a dictator anymore." For anyone to infer something else out of what he said is clutching at straws. BADLY and DESPERATELY.

Pure nonsense. It seems apparent you don't pay attention to Trump, but rather the news coverage. Gotta get outside your box sometimes, you know, and see the world outside it.

You give Trump far too much credit.

Correction. I give credit where credit is due. I apply the same rules to anyone on both sides. Find the truth and evaluate them on the merits rather than allow my judgement to be clouded by hatred and fantasy. I have explained too many times how I form my opinions and how I view things—it's not about party in so much as it's about the direction of the country and getting results. I can give Bill Clinton a pass and even Obama. Doesn't mean I think they were GREAT for the country. But they also weren't BAD for the country. But Biden is TERRIBLE for the country. If you study and evaluate Trump fairly, you will find he is actually an incredibly smart guy who knows EXACTLY what he is doing. He is also shockingly consistent in his views. You can go back 30 years and Trump was saying the same things he's saying now. Few people can say that about other politicians, and you CERTAINLY can't say that about Biden.

@porwest Trump is not an incredibly smart guy. He LOST MONEY running casinos. One of his professors at Wharton School of Business said he was the stupidest student he'd ever had. He thinks you can nuke a hurricane. Give me a break.

@xander6464 The funniest part of that is you said, "Joe has the best economy in decades" with a straight face. Meanwhile it costs the average American $12,000 more just to break even.

A good friend of mine works as a bookkeeper at Mar-a-Lago, and all the employees there love Trump. She’s a democrat, so I asked her what Trump is really like behind the scenes and away from the cameras. She says he is the sweetest, kindest and most generous man, and that he takes good care of his employees and knows almost all of them by name. I thought she would label him as a bad person, and was genuinely surprised at how much good things she says about him.

Sweet, kind and generous? Yeah, that really sounds like him. Then again, many of Hitler's staff said the same kinds of things about him, so maybe. @xander6464 As soon as the Hitler card is pulled, you know there's no argument before it.

That's because she got to see the real Donald J. Trump, who is of course not the guy the media wants us to see.

Unfortunately, those who suffer from Trump Derangement Syndrome will not look at the complete article or his speech. And that may even go for many independent voters trying to decide who to vote for. When Trump says those things in jest it just makes him come off as unpresidential in the eyes of those voters. It puts him in a bad light. As much as I like President Trumps ideas and platform for America, those off the cuff comments gets him in trouble. As an example, his comment that when he assumes the Presidency "on day one," he will be a dictator. Of course, he clarified that by jokingly saying just for 1 day. But by then the media has run with the story and people are either too busy or don't care enough to research his meaning and believes the presses version verbatim. He needs to stay on message to convince those undecided voters he has the best vision for America going forward. Jim, have you ever wondered why some of these Trump haters are so vindictive when describing him. They never seem to directly attack his policies (which helped so many in the U.S.,) and explain why they were bad. All they do is drudge up petty non-political stuff they don't like about him. Makes you ask the question, what personally did Trump do to them that makes them hate him so?

How much trouble does it really get him into, I wonder? I mean, he's got more support than ever before. He's winning in all key polls, especially in key swing state ones. He has approval ratings higher than the sitting president. I think it's the news media that portrays a sense of "trouble," but no one is really buying it. I say that even though I agree with you, and have said many times, "I wish he wouldn't give the media fodder for ridiculous coverage." Because even though idiots may be few and far between and much less ubiquitous than we otherwise may say, there are still enough idiots among us that it could stick and sway some votes, and there are circumstances where every vote counts and you simply never want to lose a single one. As for the question you posed, I think it comes down to one thing and one thing only. Trump is direct threat to the establishment and the establishment is doing all it can to try to maintain its power. To me it's that simple. They don't go after his policies because they can't, and they can't focus on their own policies because obviously they don't work. So what's left is the scare tactic. Tell them he's evil. Tell them he hates women and blacks. Tell them he's a racist. Tell them he's a threat to democracy. Tell them he will become a dictator. Tell them he will squash the Constitution and take away Grandma's Social Security Check. It's all smoke and mirrors. It's all lies. They can't win with their policies, but maybe they can win if they can convince enough people Trump's a threat to their way of life.

@dgobucks226 Part of the problem too, is that TDS is a real thing and some simply can't shake it. You have to wonder how anyone could HONESTLY feel comfortable about someone with a severe mental decline having access to the nuclear codes? Boggles the mind, actually.

You used the wrong word. The correct one is patriots. The idiots would be the ones voting for an 80+ year old man with dementia who would potentially leave the country in the hands of a cackling buffoon otherwise known as Kamala Harris.
