Day 167 – Forgiveness
Deuteronomy 1:1 These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel on this side of the Jordan in the wilderness, in the plain opposite Suph, between Paran, Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth, and Dizahab.
2 It is an eleven days’ journey from Horeb by way of Mount Seir to Kadesh Barnea.
3 Now it happened in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke to the children of Israel according to everything JEHOVAH had given him as commandments to them, 4 after he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who dwelt at Ashtaroth in Edrei.
5 On this side of the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses began to explain this law, saying, 6 “JEHOVAH our Elohiym spoke to us in Horeb, saying, ‘You have dwelt long enough at this mountain. 7 Turn and take your journey, and go to the mountains of the Amorites, to the neighboring places in the plain, in the mountains and in the lowland, in the South and on the seacoast, to the land of the Canaanites and to Lebanon, as far as the great river, the River Euphrates. 8 See, I have set the land before you; go in and possess the land which JEHOVAH swore to your fathers—to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—to give to them and their descendants after them.’
9 “I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘I alone am not able to bear you. 10 JEHOVAH your Elohiym has multiplied you, and here you are today, as the stars of heaven in multitude. 11 May JEHOVAH Elohiym of your fathers make you a thousand times more numerous than you are and bless you as He promised you! 12 How can I alone bear your problems and your burdens and your complaints? 13 Choose wise, understanding, and knowledgeable men from among your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.’ 14 You answered me and said, ‘The thing which you told us to do is good.’ 15 I took the heads of your tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, and made them heads over you, leaders of thousands, leaders of hundreds, leaders of fifties, leaders of tens, and officers for your tribes. 16 Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his brother or the stranger who is with him. 17 You will not show partiality in judgment; you will hear the small as well as the great; you will not be afraid in any man’s presence, for the judgment is Elohiym. The case that is too hard for you, bring it to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 I commanded you at that time all the things which you should do.
19 “We departed from Horeb and went through that great and terrible wilderness which you saw on the way to the mountains of the Amorites, as JEHOVAH our Elohiym had commanded us. Then we came to Kadesh Barnea. 20 I said to you, ‘You have come to the mountains of the Amorites, which JEHOVAH our Elohiym is giving us. 21 Look, JEHOVAH your Elohiym set the land before you; go up and possess it, as JEHOVAH Elohiym of your fathers has spoken to you; do not fear or be discouraged.’
22 “Every one of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, and let them search out the land for us, and bring back word to us of the way by which we should go up, and of the cities into which we will come.’ 23 The plan pleased me well; so I took twelve of your men, one man from each tribe. 24 They departed and went up into the mountains, and came to the Valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 They also took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought back word to us, saying, ‘It is a good land which JEHOVAH our Elohiym is giving us. 26 Nevertheless, you would not go up, but rebelled against the command of JEHOVAH your Elohiym; 27 and you complained in your tents, and said, ‘Because JEHOVAH hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our hearts, saying, “The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven; moreover, we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.’”
29 “Then I said to you, ‘Do not be terrified, or afraid of them. 30 JEHOVAH your Elohiym, who goes before you, will fight for you, according to everything He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how JEHOVAH your Elohiym carried you, as a man carries his son, in the way that you went until you came to this place.’ 32 Yet, for all that, you did not believe JEHOVAH your Elohiym, 33 who went in the way before you to search out a place for you to pitch your tents, to show you the way you should go, in the fire by night and in the cloud by day. 34 JEHOVAH heard the sound of your words, and was angry, and took an oath, saying, 35 ‘Surely not one of these men of this evil generation will see that good land of which I swore to give to your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he will see it, and to him and his children I am giving the land on which he walked, because he wholly followed JEHOVAH.’
37 “JEHOVAH was also angry with me for your sakes, saying, ‘Even you will not go in there; 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he will go in there. Encourage him, for he will cause Israel to inherit it. 39 Moreover, your little ones and your children, who you say will be victims, who today have no knowledge of good and evil, they will go in there; to them I will give it, and they will possess it. 40 As for you, turn and take your journey into the wilderness by the Way of the Red Sea.’
41 “Then you answered and said to me, ‘We have sinned against JEHOVAH; we will go up and fight, just as JEHOVAH our Elohiym commanded us.’ When every one of you had girded on his weapons of war, you were ready to go up into the mountain. 42 JEHOVAH said to me, ‘Tell them, “Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; lest you be defeated before your enemies.’”
43 “I spoke to you; yet you would not listen, but rebelled against the command of JEHOVAH, and presumptuously went up into the mountain. 44 The Amorites who dwelt in the mountain came out against you and chased you as bees do and drove you back from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before JEHOVAH, but JEHOVAH would not listen to your voice nor give ear to you. 46 So you remained in Kadesh many days, according to the days that you spent there.

We begin the book of Deuteronomy. Before Moses went up into the mountain for Elohiym to take him to Himself, he gave the children of Israel an account of everything they encountered from the moment they left Egypt to where they were that day, at the point of entering the Promised Land. He reminded them of their response to JEHOVAH as He led them through the wilderness, and their disobedience to Him.
He spoke, not to the children of Israel who came out of Egypt, but to their sons and daughters because their parents died in the wilderness as JEHOVAH promised for their disobedience.
When you hear accounts about your parents and their generation, you listen eagerly because you want to know how they lived, what they did, and what they faced. People will write accounts of the times, so the era won’t be forgotten. Moses did the same for the children who didn’t know the hardship their parents faced in Egypt. Though some were old enough to come out of Egypt with their parents as those ready to enter the promised land were zero to twenty years of age when their parents rebelled against JEHOVAH.
When you hear the accounts, you promise yourselves not to repeat the same mistakes your parents made. Yet history shows it repeats itself. What once was, happened again, many times.
Solomon wrote about how life repeats itself.
Ecclesiastes 1:4 One generation passes away, and another generation comes; but the earth abides forever.
5 The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, and hastens to the place where it arose.
6 The wind goes toward the south and turns around to the north; the wind whirls about continually and comes again on its circuit.
7 The rivers run into the sea, yet the sea is not full; to the place from which the rivers come, there they return.
8 Everything is full of labor; man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
9 That which has been, will be, that which is done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun.
When you accepted Yeshuwa as Savior and Lord, you promised to obey Him in everything. You told yourself you wouldn’t repeat the sins of your past. You wouldn’t let Satan have power over you. How has that worked out for you? Every day Satan comes against you to cause you to return to your past. Every day, you must confess your sin before Elohiym, ask His forgiveness, and strive to remain faithful. Every day.
Romans 3:1 What advantage then has the Jew, or what is the profit of circumcision?
2 Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of Theos.
3 For what if some did not believe? Will their unbelief make the faithfulness of Theos without effect?
4 Certainly not! Indeed, let Theos be true but every man a liar. As it is written: “That You may be justified in Your words and may overcome when You are judged.”
5 If our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of Theos, what will we say? Is Theos unjust who inflicts wrath? (I speak as a man.)
6 Certainly not! For then how will Theos judge the world?
7 For if the truth of Theos has increased through my lie to His glory, why am I also still judged as a sinner?
8 Why not say, “Let us do evil that good may come”? —as we are slanderously reported and as some affirm that we say. Their condemnation is just.
9 What then? Are we better than they? Not at all. For we have previously charged both Jews and Greeks that they are all under sin.
10 As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 there is none who understands; there is none who seeks after Theos. 12 They have turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one.”
13 “Their throat is an open tomb; with their tongues they have practiced deceit”; “The poison of asps is under their lips”; 14 “Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness.”
15 “Their feet are swift to shed blood; 16 destruction and misery are in their ways; 17 and the way of peace they have not known.” 18 “There is no fear of Theos before their eyes.”
None of us are righteous. None of us. We need to confess daily and spend time with Elohiym in His Word. We need to commit to prayer. Only then can see JEHOVAH’S forgiveness.
When you read and study the past and how Elohiym took care of His people when they sinned, you have hope. You know Theos’ faithfulness and love. You know His promises to you, and you know He will never fail you. His mercy is new every day because He is faithful to forgive.
What are you waiting for? It’s time to ask Elohiym for forgiveness, so you can know His overwhelming love for you.
Let’s pray: Father, I am a sinner. Satan continues to bring up my past and I fall victim to his lies and schemes. I confess my sin. Help me learn from my past and not repeat it. Help me overcome and walk in Your love for me every day. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Even Moses sinned, as we all do, but we all need to try to stay close to God, and to his forgiveness too, so that we can continue to live as best we can, from God's commandments, and his way of love, and truth.
