Day 171 – Life Deuteronomy 5:1 Moses called Israel, and said to them, “Hear, O Israel, the statutes and judgments which I speak in your hearing today, that you may learn them and be careful to observe them. 2 JEHOVAH our Elohiym made a covenant with us in Horeb. 3 JEHOVAH did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, those who are here today, who are alive. 4 JEHOVAH talked with you face to face on the mountain from the midst of the fire. 5 I stood between JEHOVAH and you at that time, to declare to you the word of JEHOVAH; for you were afraid because of the fire, and you did not go up the mountain. He said: 6 ‘I am JEHOVAH your Elohiym who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 7 ‘You shall have no other elohiym before Me. 8 ‘You will not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 9 you will not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, JEHOVAH your Elohiym, am a jealous El, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments. 11 ‘You will not take the name of JEHOVAH your Elohiym in vain, for JEHOVAH will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. 12 ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as JEHOVAH your Elohiym commanded you. 13 Six days you will labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of JEHOVAH your Elohiym. In it you will do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 Remember you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and JEHOVAH your Elohiym brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore, JEHOVAH your Elohiym commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as JEHOVAH your Elohiym commanded you, that your days may be long, and it may be well with you in the land which JEHOVAH your Elohiym is giving you. 17 ‘You will not murder. 18 ‘You will not commit adultery. 19 ‘You will not steal. 20 ‘You will not bear false witness against your neighbor. 21 ‘You will not covet your neighbor’s wife; you will not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’ 22 “These words JEHOVAH spoke to your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders, 24 and you said, ‘Surely, JEHOVAH our Elohiym has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we heard His voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that Elohiym speaks with man; yet he still lives. 25 Now, therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of JEHOVAH our Elohiym anymore, then we will die. 26 For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living Elohiym speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 You go near and hear all that JEHOVAH our Elohiym may say and tell us everything JEHOVAH our Elohiym says to you, and we will hear and do it.’ 28 “Then JEHOVAH heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and JEHOVAH said to me, ‘I heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in everything they say. 29 Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me and always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them and with their children forever! 30 Go and say to them, “Return to your tents.” 31 But as for you, stand here by Me, and I will speak to you the commandments, statutes, and judgments which you will teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I am giving them to possess.’ 32 “Therefore, you will be careful to do as JEHOVAH your Elohiym commanded you; you will not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 You will walk in all the ways which JEHOVAH your Elohiym commanded you, that you may live, and it may be well with you, and you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess. God’s names: JEHOVAH – Self-existent, Eternal Elohiym – Supreme God El – Almighty God Yeshuwa – Jesus Christos – Anointed One, Messiah God’s character: Lawgiver Jealous Merciful Covenant Maker Guide Judge When you need to remember something, you memorize it, saying it over to yourself until you know it. This often happened when you took a test for school or work so you could get a promotion or advance to the next grade level. You also memorized events so you could tell them to others. You see the evidence of that with news stories. Moses spoke to the new generation of Israelites who were ready to go into the Promised Land. He told them what happened at Mount Sinai, how Elohiym gave him the law and the peoples’ response when they heard JEHOVAH’S voice. Moses told them the Ten Commandments and what would happen if they obeyed them; they would live long lives. When you accepted Yeshuwa, JEHOVAH’S Son, as Savior and Lord, you committed to obey Him in everything He told you. It also meant you needed to obey the Ten Commandments so you could live long lives. Many Christians argue that they no longer need to obey the Law because Yeshuwa fulfilled the law and they are no longer under the law, but under grace. What happens if you disobey one of the Ten Commandments? Many of the laws Elohiym gave Moses can be found in the laws governing the country where you live. They come with consequences for disobedience. Romans 7:7 What will we say then? Is the law a sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, “You will not covet.” 8 But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead. 9 I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived, and I died. 10 The commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death. 11 For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me. 12 Therefore, the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good. When you know the law, you can keep yourself pure before Elohiym. Yeshuwa made a way through His body and blood on the cross, so you do not suffer the consequences of disobedience. Instead, when you sin, and everyone does, you can go before Elohiym, confess your sin, and He will forgive you and cleanse you from unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (NKJV) Now grace binds you to JEHOVAH through the body and blood of Yeshuwa. Grace keeps you pure before Elohiym because Yeshuwa took your sins and nailed them to the cross. You no longer live in sin under the law, because you know the condemnation of sin, and the justification of grace through the body and blood of Yeshuwa Christos. The law is important because it shows you your sin. Yeshuwa Christos took your sin and set you free from the law of sin and death. Grace freed you. Sin no longer holds you captive. Have you accepted Yeshuwa Christos as Savior and Lord? If so, you are free from the consequences of the law. If not, you can set yourself free by accepting Him as Savior and Lord, so the consequence of your sin no longer condemns you to an eternity apart from Elohiym. Let’s pray: Father, thank you for Your law that shows me my sin. Thank you for Your Son, who took my sin and nailed it to the cross. Thank you for freeing me so I can live in grace and not condemnation. Thank you for reminding me of who I am in You, Your child. Help me live for You every day of my life. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen. Copyright © 7 July 2024 by Valerie Routhieaux The image belongs to me.

Yes, I agree, the law is important as it shows us our sins, and we need to know our sins to confess them, and yet, if we ask God for forgiveness, for both known, and unknown sins, our merciful father will forgive us for all of our sins then too.
