7/12/24 - Update On My Husband

Didn't hear from my husband last night. :-( I wanted to see if he did steps yesterday and how that went.
It seems like he has reached a bit of a plateau; and his advancements seem to be really slow in coming. He has SO MUCH muscle to regain; and, at his age, that's very difficult even with intense physical therapy.
I called my favorite Social Worker at the facility to find out how often residents get PT if they are in long-term care. Haven't heard back from her of course. I will keep calling. The insurance company wants us to change my husband to LTC; but if he gets less PT, then that's not going to work; and I will use that as part of my argument on Wednesday at the hearing/appeal.
Thank you for your continued support, prayers and thoughts.

@LindaOHio - Should the insurance cover, you could always pay for some PT sessions, it would be a lot less than paying more than $ 300 a day.

They get as much or as little as is specified in their plan of care or care plan, whichever it is called there. Ideally nursing assistants are trained by PT in restorative care and will implement the programs as they are called for on a daily basis, just as I do with my student at school I work with a physical therapist who sees him one day a week, but he gets physical therapy from me and other staff that works with him every day. The good nursing homes I worked in walked with the residents who had PT every day, weekends, holidays, you name it. Since this is a rehab facility he should have been getting this kind of care all along.

@LindaOHio How did they get hired? I Have worked with some lazy preschool teachers. I think they saw it as an "easy" job.
"80% of the nurses and aides are lazy and would never think of walking with a resident."

@TheHorse Everyplace in the US is looking for employees. I imagine they take what they can get.

I hope the hearing goes well. Have you had a meeting with the PT staff to see what the expectations for him are and how much he can be expected to progress? Maybe since you have trouble getting them on the phone you can contact them by email. It will also create a paper trail.

No PT on Friday. That means 3 days of lying in bed. I am livid.

Your husband is discouraged, I'm sure. It's hard to develop muscular mobility, when PT isn't every single day.

@MarieCoyle Wow. I can't imagine undergoing physical therapy even five days a week. I come out of PT exhausted and achey and weak- AND wondering how I will drive home.

@MarieCoyle 5 days a week is wonderful, but Linda's husband isn't getting this much.

In my area, there is not a rehab that has PT every day. The most anyone gets is 5 days per week. I think that's the standard almost everywhere, at least it seems to be that way here.

Has the Rehab facility decided your husband is not capable of making a complete recovery and will need assistance with everyday living?
That appears to be the signals being given by insurance and rehab. I guess as you state, his progress has plateaued, and more PT will not improve his outcome. It seems after a certain amount of time one's physical condition levels off.

They want him to go to long term care because insurance does not cover that. The reports that PT gave the insurance company were much more positive than what was actually happening. This will be one of my arguments at the hearing.

I hope that you get some positive response from the social worker soon and all goes well with the hearing appeal. Hold on. You have been strong and handling all so well so far. Take care

PT is a struggle for most that is up in age & just have been laying around
for a long time without help getting up & moving around, it's not easy.
I know when I finally got where I could get PT it was hard & hurt like H3ll
but there was days I just didn't have it in me to do, but the more they pushed
me to move around the better it got, & I thank god for the PT people that
kept pushing me to do what I needed to do to be where I am today.

@LindaOHio I want to say that's good, but on the other hand
depending on who is doing the pt on him can be too hard.

Your husband needs to eat more protein rich foods to regain his muscles.
Hope you hear from the social worker soon.
