To Season or Not To Season

Calling all myLot chefs and kitchen folk. I found a great deal on an enameled (coated) cast iron frying pan on sale. It was seriously really reduced and then today was also the last day of their entire store wide 20% off sale. So yes, I picked up something that I needed and saved alot. But......I have never had a cast iron frying pan in my almost 37 years of housekeeping. And no.........I do not know the first things about getting it going. I searched online and apparently I do not have to season it. But I know that these pans can be a blessing if you season it and wash it properly. This cast iron frying pan has an enamel coating. Can you direct me in the right choice of seasoning/not seasoning? And if seasoning, I see online that I have to put it into the oven upside down for an hour at 375F, is that accurate? ~Photo is mine

If it has an enamel coating, I wouldn't think you would season it. Have a good week.

@LindaOHio You are correct, those with enamel coating do not need seasoning.

@LadyDuck I have an enameled cast iron pan. It's very nonstick.

Cast iron pans do need to be seasoned prior to use. Enameled cast iron pans not require any seasoning at all. I had a "Le Creuset" and it did not need seasoning.

This is a very lovely, yet heavy enamel coated cast frying pan. It is a beautiful rich colour.

@LadyDuck This one did not come with any seasoning or not to season instructions. I have seasoned it. I have not used it as of yet, but will probably use it on Sunday when I make Ron his fried eggs.

@Juliaacv My enamel coated cast frying pan is the classic "Le Creuset" red colour. It came with the instructions about what to do before the first usage. It was specified to remove all labels, wash very well and dry, but not to season.

@Juliaacv You can. And always dry them on the stove with heat after washing.

Thank you, I have decided from what I have researched that I will season it. I have the oven on now, but it has 2 things in it and no room for a sheet to put the pan on, so after I take supper out I will put the pan in upside down on the cookie sheet. That kitchen is Willow and Harper's outside mud kitchen. They are actual working sinks, the water is stored in the reservoir and then recycled. Harper loves doing dishes out there.

@1creekgirl They have literally spend hundreds of hours playing out on the deck since Mother's Day weekend when it was constructed. In late June my husband put up a gazebo over it to keep the girls shaded.

I think it is probably a good idea to season your new pan. As Vicki says, that kitchen is just the best! I'd just about play in that myself.

I did season it. Grandpa and Mommie built that kitchen for the girls last May. They have literally spent hundreds of hours playing in the sinks. Harper washes dishes every day in it at least twice a day. And funny enough, they both run to help Grandpa empty Mommy's dishwasher when inside the house. One day they may not be so eager to do chores like that.

@Juliaacv As I was reading I was thinking that - that their favourite chore might change later on.

Always season cast iron. Lodge sells a cleaning and seasoning kit. Invest in it.

I have a cast iron pan I realized I could not use because it does not do well on a hot plate so I have not done anything with it, Sorry that is about all I can say about cast iron pans, I found this

Thank you, that was an interesting read. I know that it is not necessary to season it, but I have it in the oven currently seasoning it. This article really explains the difference between the enamel coated and the non-coated cast iron pans. It is a good investment, and I got mine on sale, which pleased me.

I don't have any cast iron so I can't offer any advice. But, this is probably the best place to get first hand advice. E joy your new pan.
