Who gives a crap?

We’ve just ordered our second box of Crap Toilet Paper. We’re getting a pack of four dozen. Although the name is a bit ‘off’, the company gives 50% of their profits ‘to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world’. The website says that, when the company started, 2.4 billion people didn’t have access to a toilet, or roughly 40% of the global population. Around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases, - or one every two minutes. In July 2012, three young men launched a crowdfunding campaign. One sat on a toilet for 50 hours until there were enough pre-orders to start production. I don’t know how much they sell nowadays but they’re still going. Fifty percent of their profits sounds pretty generous to me.

Wow, you never think of people not having something as basic as a toilet, but then again, if you don't have water or food to eat..I guess toilets are lower on the list of needs. That is amazing about the children that die..so unnecessary.

When we helped put in a water supply in the back blocks of Thailand the houses didn't have toilets. Luckily the priest's house where we were staying did but it was a squat toilet.

@JudyEv I quite like those - you never have to worry about whether the seat is clean! Also it's supposed to be better, health-wise, to adopt that position.

@Fleura I agree with all you say BUT if you haven't been 'squatting' all your life, and you then have to use them when you're old, it becomes very hard to get up from a squat and it's not always a good idea to put your hands down!

Thomas Crapper invented the float valve that makes the toilet work.

That is such a wonderful undertaking, and good on you and Vince for supporting such a cause. I had no idea that something such as this, or a lack of it, could lead to deaths in children.

@JudyEv I remember when I worked at a certain employer, we had managers that travelled over to the Philippines and they had that issue.

Many third-world countries have very unsanitary conditions. Lebanon and Gaza are now experiencing the same problems.

Fifty percent of their profits is extremely generous. Instead of financing wars we should start financing the construction of structures that can help the children. Too many are still dying because of lack of hygiene.

I would imagine the biggest problem in some countries is that they do not have any kind of sewer line. Will this company also create a sewer system for those countries?

They are available here too. I just hope the scheme is effective. I have read about sanitation projects providing toilets in places with no reliable water supply, for example, or where there were other problems. A fancy toilet just standing there as a sort of 'folly' while all the locals just walked out into the bush as usual.

We went to Thailand to install a clean water source. One had been put in before but there was no-one to maintain the pump that the scheme relied on. Our team put in a pipe from a clean water source high up in the mountain and it gravity fed to a tank in the village with every two houses having a tap. There were no toilets there but at least the village then had clean water.

@nela13 It might be a bit dearer than some other brands. We are lucky enough that a few extra dollars don't matter too much especially when it's going to charity.
