My insurance company just doesn't get it.

Eariler this year, I recieved a phone call from my insurance company asking me to go to a lab to get a kidney fuction test and vision screening done. They insisted it was due to my diabeties diagnosis which was done knowing full-well I would have high levels of sugar in my blood and pee. My husband even mentioned I was not prepared and the doctor is like 'we know but you have to do this anyway'. They knew full-well results weren't accurate and dignosed me anyway. At the time I flat out refused to take medicine to lower my blood sugar. Because I'd been monitoring my sugar for years so I understood it better than anyone. I knew that I often ate foods that would spike my blood sugar or a lot more of the foods and drink I don't normally drink. As soon as George ended up in the hospital, and our staycations slowed down, my sugar dropped as I knew it would. Ever since the insurance company and my doctors office kept me wanting blood work and screenings. I refused, rather rudely I might add, and they sent me another DO it yourself home test kit this one for kidneys. It is NOT designed for a Blind person to do alone, and my husband's handwriting doesn't look like much according to everyone I've talked to. If the info isn't readable the lab won't accept it. Plus, I've done those type of finger sticks before, and the process leaves the finger numb for a while. Not interested on doing that on purpose. So another test I need to figure out how to safely dispose of because I don't have a sharps container. The lancets I use are self-contained in a drum. Not the ones they provide for the testing. I am not stupid.

Not to be nosy but what type of ins do you have? cause that sounds a little off to me but I'm no pro at this type stuff, I'd be asking some question to some 1. My ins doesn't ask me to do any test but my dr's do, like I have 1 coming up in Nov & 1 in March of next yr but I got them from my dr not my ins comp. I was diagnosed with Diabetes while I was in the hosp last year when I had my Gallbladder removed & crashed twice in the process of surgery from it.

Uniated Health Care. Basically a free branch of Medicare because I'm disabled and got it through my parents.

@2ndchances24 I could get private insurance, but then I'd have to pay fr it. Well as they say you get what you pay for.

Insurance companies are very pushy because they want to make sure your conditions are under control so they don't have to pay out any $$. My husband and I run into this all the time. They are constantly calling, wanting someone to come to the house to check out my husband. Have a good day.

But your husband isn't even home, and they should know that. They've stopped paying for his rehab.

@LindaOHio Next time that you talk to him, ask him if you can pass on his phone number. Given he's still in rehab, maybe he does need to talk to them, himself.

Couldn't get it there. But I'll think of something. I just have to find a container that's puncture proof. I'm sure I've got something around here that'll work. But I also don't know how their lancets were sent since I didn't get that far into the box.

So many medical tests are not set up for blind people to do by themselves. Hubby should do a stool test but doesn't want to have to get me involved.

I think I could do the blood tests, myself. My problem comes in labeling the bag and the ammount of blood I'd need to fill the circle. And, if I physical touch the card then the sample is compermised. Plus I have to let it dry for three hours. That's easy. I just can't see what I write, and I've had checks rejected by the bank so I rather not risk it for a test I do not want.

@kaylachan That's terrible about checks being rejected by the bank- that has been a huge fear of mine with my hubby's signature. He learned to write when he was a kid but it is not really super great.

@sallypup If you can make something that looks like an x, in most states that's considered a legal signure. Often times most people don't care how legable a signure is. I'll admit to not bothering to really try with mine. The bank rejected my check because when I wrote out the ammount, in words, they couldn't understand it.

Crazy how they never bother asking what you ate or wonder if the results were accurate. My mother was diagnosed as diabetic for the same reason. I hope you can soon figure out a way to perform a test and prove them wrong.

I can't. The only real way I could do it, would make me sick. Not worth it in my opinion. Typically you need to be fasting before a blood sugar test. It's easy to do at home with my home glocose meter, because I can control the wait time. When I go to a lab, I have to wait my turn. That's physically painful and difficult. I'm often tired, sore and shakey and they have the nerve to ask me to transfer into their chairs. Sitting up in my wheelchair, takes a lot of energy. Not a big deal when I'm propperly hydraded and fed. Not so easy when I'm tired.

@somewitch I don't have money to pay someone to fill out my personal info. I would never hire ssomeone to do it. I wouldn't trust them to write the right things. I'm simply not going to do it. Pure and simple. I don't want to do it, anyway. I didn't ask for it. It just appeared in our mailbox with instructions to do it within the next 30 days and do it on a weekday.

@kaylachan Very tough situation, sorry about that. Yes, performing the test at home would be best, and obviously they won't accept your glucose meter result. And I guess paying someone to assist you with the kit they gave you is not cheap. But maybe you can find affordable help somewhere, I hope so.
