We had a situation where one manager who is well respected among peers and another manager who is liked among peers were competing for a promotion. I truly believed that the well-liked person had the bigger probability to get promotion. However, the promotion went to the manager who is well respected!
I thought hard about the topic and had made certain conclusions on what could have transpired and the logic involved.
We like someone based on some traits. Likeability helps in forming bonds and make the interactions enjoyable. However, in order to be likeable, there could be times at which one needs to compromise certain values.
In case of respect, it is foundation for credibility. We usually respect people for their qualities or skills. Respect is earned through consistent actions. Respect directly linked with reliability and creates a sense of trust and loyalty. Respect brings the person with a profound sense of accomplishment.
So, perhaps respect is best form of integrity of character and in professional settings , bring long term benefits. Respect brings the consistency and reliability and that matters most in the professional world.
I guess these are the reasons for being respected offering more advantages than being liked.
What do you think?

Well, in a way I feel they go hand in hand. while you don't have to like a person to respect them, being able to respect them does help in liking them, or at least liking them for the right reasons.

Yes I agree. We cannot trust those who are just likeable because they just tend to compromise to please people, unlike those who are well respected because on how they do their job and how they bring themselves well.
Anyway promotion without being influenced by the corporate politics should always look for the right attitude + right and good work ethics+ and how well a person do their task + how he also look for the people under him and a balance way of taking care of the people and the company as well.

Respect is much more needed and valued than Likeness!! We can have opposite views and I can still respect you which is seen nowhere today! Likeness also leads to possessiveness and belongingness which can turn into something negative if the needs are not being fulfilled!
