Halloween is my favorite holiday. There are so many aspects to this day: the thin veil between this and the other side, Samhain, costumes—it just goes on and on. I have found several interesting facts about it that I wanted to share.
* Halloween is the second-highest-grossing holiday for candy purchases and costumes. Christmas is the first.
* Trick-or-treating in the Middle Ages was called 'gazing'. Kids would go door to door in costumes, but instead of candy, they asked for food, wine, and money. The real treat wasn't until 1927.
* In Alabama, dressing up as a priest or nun for Halloween is illegal.
* Anoka, Minnesota is known as the Halloween capital of the world. More candy is handed out here than anywhere else in the U.S.
* Americans buy about 600 million pounds of candy each year for Halloween. That's like 6 Titanic size ships full of candy.
* Samhainaphobia is the actual fear of Halloween. Can you imagine being terrified of the actual night met to scare you?
* Halloween is older than Christianity. It is rooted in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which dates back over 2,000 years.
* The tradition of wearing costumes started thinking they could confuse the ghosts.
If they couldn't recognize you they would surely leave you alone.
