State of Sides for 2024

In June 2024 Campbell's did a survey of 5,000 US adults 18 and over. Asking what is the favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal. It revealed that 56% of Americans taking the poll would rather pile sides on their plates rather than turkey. 60% said they enjoyed preparing the sides rather than the turkey. Stuffing ranked as the most popular side. Mashed potatoes dropped to second and then sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, and mac and cheese. But what is your favorite pie? Mine is pumpkin. Do you have a favorite family dish? One they fix every year? My least favorite is the carrot salad my grams used to fix. It had raisins and carrots. Yuck! I couldn't eat it. Besides Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner what is your favorite dinner in the winter? For me, it is either roast beef or pinto beans and cornbread.

I love green bean casserole. My favorite pie is no-bake pumpkin pie. My favorite winter meal would be pot roast.

I love pumpkin pie. When I did make big Thanksgiving meals my stuffing was always made with bread cubes, chicken bouillion, and sauteed crumbled Italian sausage, Sometimes I would add mushrooms,

My pumpkin pie has to have a large mound of whipped cream on top. I used to follow my grandmother's stuffing recipe. She cut up the gizzard which I couldn't handle but rest was much like yours.

I love all of it. But wow, I love turkey and I don't mind preparing it. I love sides too but there are so many to make - each one takes time - so sometimes the turkey seems to be the easiest thing. My favorite pie would be apple - with the apples being on the crisp side. My mom prepared the same things every year . . . like I said, I love all of it. And I have pretty much kept the same menu. My sister started her green bean casserole thing every year, but most of the family doesn't eat it. Oh yes, a good beef meal is so delicious in winter . . . be it roast beef, pot roast, beef stew - and of it!!!!

I'm not big on the bean casserole either. I hope your sister likes it. Leaves a lot for her. I agree about the beef in winter. It sure has gotten expensive in the last year or so.

@celticeagle Right . I will say her green bean casserole has been good for throwing in soup with other leftovers. But otherwise, yah, not my thing. Oh my gosh, yes - the price of beef - EEK! I only get it if it's on sale.

I love all the sides; but I also love the turkey. I like a lot of different pies -- strawberry rhubarb, apple cranberry raisin, lemon meringue, Key lime...and more! When I used to be able to cook, my favorite side was my sausage stuffing. Pinto beans and cornbread sounds really good. Have a great day.

I like the tender white parts of the turkey. I'm big on pumpkin pie, strawberry rhubarb sounds good and the key lime. You have a good one too.

The turkey has always been my least favorite part of Thanksgiving dinner. We always cook a ham as well and I much prefer that. Our favorite sides are green bean casserole and mashed potatoes with gravy.

I can't seem to find a good brand of ham or we would too. I'm too finicky i guess.

@porwest ......Same here. I remember when my mom got government-canned meat. Others thought it would be disgusting and gave theirs to her. It was delicious and I ate good.

@celticeagle I have never worried about the brand. I have bought off brand spiral hams many times and they were delicious.

Once I became single again, I don't cook turkey. It's tacos, roast, brisket or something like that. My son hates turkey. My daughters only do it because their husbands want it. Whether making turkey or something else, the sides are mashed potatoes, mixed green salad, spinach dip in a bread bowl, and something someone wants to add like jalapeno poppers wrapped in bacon. Pies are usually pumpkin and cheesecake. Once in awhile, pecan is added. I will be camp hosting this year and quite the distance from family and friends so will just eat my normal stuff.

I don't cook them anymore either. We just get a small hunk of turkey and have enough for us three.
