It's Nuts Out There

And exactly as I expected it to be. I went out to pick up some groceries because there were actually a few items on my list that I genuinely needed. But of course, the stores were packed full and the shelves quickly showing their bottoms as people are, per the usual, going insane over a coming winter storm expected to hit on Monday. My wife and I always get a kick out of it. We're from Wisconsin. Sure, 6-8 inches, which is what is expected, is a royal pain in the butt. But it is also not the end of the world, and we will hardly be snowed in to the point that, if we absolutely had to, we couldn't get out. As I like to say often, people are neat, and panic, at least in a scenario like this one, is quite hilarious to see. ***Image is of our actual driveway after the Blizzard of 2011 in West Allis, WI, a suburb of Milwaukee.***

We made snow caves during one of the blizzards in Chicago back in the day. You photo made my inner child want to dig.

@porwest Can you explain this? I have been riding horses all my life, and have never encountered a spring a horse could not dance over. "Riding horses with springs that could snap toes off were popular, for example."

@porwest I bet all the trikes and bikes we rode had lead paint on them. But I'm still here.

We did something like that in Iron Mountain, Michigan as kids when we lived there for a short time. I imagine it was pretty stupid and dangerous now that I think about it. If the cave would have caved in, we could have been trapped. Of course, everything was more dangerous when we were kids. Riding horses with springs that could snap toes off were popular, for example. Heavy yard darts. Walkie-Talkies with 10' long telescopic antennas sure to poke eyes out. Lots of things come to mind.

You mean you don't need 100 cans of food and 500 rolls of toilet paper? I've never had to live in snow, so I can't even imagine . . . 6-8 inches of snow here would mean it's the end of the world .

@porwest In the early 70's there was a winter storm that froze everything from central Kansas where I was going to school down to Texas, if I remember correctly.

@porwest Just like how we shrug off earthquakes . . . a little shake isn't going to bother us.

In California, it would make perfect sense for people to panic. I've seen the same happen when Dallas gets hit with an ice storm. But here? It should be a walk in the park. lol

We never learn, do we? You'd think people would by now.

You would think so. But here we are. Some people are just incapable of making sense of the world they live in.

@porwest George and I have a strange method on how we supply stuff. I find we have months worth of supply. It keeps us fed when we need it to be and we don't have to go out as often which cuts down on the cost of ride share. Sure I find myself spending money on things we used to do ourselves, but I look at it this way, ten bucks for a nail trim vs a hundred or more possible for a trip to the hospital because I cut or he did something himself trying to use nail clippers. The VA pays for a lot of things and would cover a lot, but if they don't like it if you go outside their network. So it can get expencive real quick especially if I need antibotics and can't get it from the va.

Being a weather geek, I went to the grocery store on Monday when they first started talking about this.

I just find it funny that so many people simply think they'll be stranded in their homes through something like this. Granted, in extreme situations, such as for the elderly, it may be truer. Still...it's hilarious to me.

I guess I shouldn't complain too much. We get WAY less snow than we did when we lived in Wisconsin. Doesn't mean I still don't hate it, though. lol

We went to the store last night because I had a prescription to pick up. Yes, we bought some stuff, but we have plenty of food if we had not. It just is not smart to skip picking up when we are there because it is a thirty mile trip. I love having an excuse to stay in.

Just posted about the Arctic blast hitting Florida temps to 30s and the Panhandle might see snow flurries and the beat goes on right?

Here in eastern NC close to the coast, the schools close, people call out for work, and Walmart is picked clean of milk and bread at the first two snowflakes.

It's like that here in Florida with hurricanes, people panic buy groceries even if the storm is not going to directly hit their area. And here's a funny one for you: in the next few days, low temperatures are predicted to dip into the 20s for a couple of days, and people are already panicking. That's Florida for you; we have no idea to handle a deep freeze.

I haven't looked outside; but yesterday we had about 4". There's a lot more expected along the lake. This weather sucks. Have a good weekend.
