Back in the 70's (ancient history for many here) Carob was being pushed as a chocolate substitute. I am not really sure why, because it doesn't really have much less in the way of calories than chocolate. For awhile carob products were being sold everywhere. Now, you have to hunt for them. The only place I see it sometimes is maybe an ingredient in herbal tea of something. Do you remember the carob craze? Have you had it? Do you like it?

I've eaten it in different products. I can see why it never replaced chocolate. It is sometimes an ingredient in herbal teas.

@snowy22315 Some scholars believe that when John the Baptist said he was eating locusts that meant he was eating carob.

@sallypup Really? How did you come upon that obscure fact?

I have tried it a few times, doesn't float my boat. I don't mind it as a tea flavoring though.

@snowy22315 I'm glad it works as a tea flavoring.

It’s still used as a chocolate substitute in chocolate-flavored teas. The reason it never caught on is because chocolate is chocolate, and you can’t fake it!

It isn't just chocolate flavored teas that have it. I have come across it in flavored teas of different varieties. I almost always get some kind of cinnamon spiced tea and sometimes it is in there depending on the brand. It might be my fave Bengal Spice tea that has it in, not sure.

@Juliaacv In my opinion, carob is a poor substitute.

@snowy22315 I am not a huge chocolate lover, but I am not one to take substitutes necessarily either.

I remember the carob nuts and raisins. Friends kept telling me it tasted exactly like chocolate but the couple of times I tried it, I didn't like it. It tasted nothing like chocolate to me.

It has kind of the same dark flavor, but it isn't really sweet like chocolate.

@DaddyEvil You just can't expect the same sweet deliciousness you have with chocolate.

@snowy22315 True... It had an "off" taste to me that I didn't like.

Yeah, natural and more nutritious than chocolate I guess. I'm sorry, unless they do something to make it taste better, it is always going to be on the back burner, a poor second cousin of chocolate.

That would explain it. Your mom may know what it is.
