We've Got Eggs...Again! Yay!

Yes, the chickens are coming out of their molt and we have eggs again, finally! This year the molt ended earlier than usual for my flock. They usually don't start laying again until March and one year it was April before they started laying again.
For those of you that don't know, hens stop laying eggs or slow drastically down when they start molting (loss of feathers and new ones grow in) in the Fall. I am happy to have fresh eggs for breakfast again!
For a good week now, I have been collecting eggs from 1-5 a day. I noticed one day I had a small egg, which would be from the new Cinnamon Queen chicks that I got last summer. They are now of egg laying age.
I didn't have to worry about buying eggs on my last shopping trip as I have an 18 count carton of eggs collected in my refrigerator. I am hoping that the winter blast next week does not confuse the girls and they continue laying. I can't wait for the time change, so that they can get back to normal with their laying.
Are egg prices starting to down in your supermarket? The cheapest I have seen them in my area was at Aldi's for $2.49 a dozen.

I'll have to look up egg prices for Walmart. I haven't bought any because George hasn't wanted any.

@kaylachan Nope, not at all. That's when I'm glad that I have chickens!

I never knew that chickens molted! But that would make perfect sense as they grow and age.
You are so lucky to have your own flock to provide a source of eggs, especially in this current state of egg shortages and high prices!
I've noticed the eggs in my local area are hit or miss. The shelves are either stocked full or completely empty. It's always one extreme or another. My daughter bought a dozen eggs yesterday, I'll have to ask her how much she paid for them.
Are you worried about your chickens catching that bird flu that is devastating the market right now?

@moffittjc Yes and scary that it can be passed to humans! I am going to go back to hatching eggs this spring vs. buying new chicks to add to the flock, just for that reason.

@kareng Oh goodness, I hope you (and your chickens) are safe from catching that bird flu. It's crazy how it's been spreading so fast around the world.

@kareng I know, I think it's crazy that these bird flus can be caught by humans so easily. To me that's crazy!

@wolfgirl569 Me either. I did notice tonight in a quick run through grocery store in town that the eggs were down to $3.99 a dz. there. That is a good sign. They were higher than Walmart before.

Yep. I saw them at Aldi at $2.49 as well. I didn't buy any as I have some left that I got the last time at Ruler for $2.19. I am hoping by the time I need them I can get them for around that. $2.49 is still a painful price, but I have slowly been giving in a little bit.

@kareng I think prices may come down at some point as well. Probably not as low as I would like to see them return to. But any break would be nice.
As for that woman, it's terrible. It's newsworthy. But I mean, until it were to become a huge thing? I'm not worried about it.

@kareng To some extent this is true. But I do believe that people eventually reach a breaking point. Even back in the Obama days when gas prices were tickling $5 a gallon, we suddenly go reports of MAJOR pullbacks in gas usage. People found a way to avoid driving.

Eggs are high here, $6 and up for a dozen. I've not bought any since Christmas and that was because I made cookies and such for gifts.

That's the range we had around Christmas. They have come down a little bit, but I won't pay that for "old" eggs or white eggs from chickens housed in crates with too many others. Plus the store bought eggs do not taste near as good as fresh eggs. So keeping my girls! I bought some at Thanksgiving for desserts but only because I had to!

I’m allergic to eggs, so I couldn’t tell you the price.

$4.99 a dozen for my eggs yesterday. Has your feed price gone up? Do they still sell feed in 50 pound bags? At one point when I had hens it looked like the feed store guys were starting to get unhappy about toting 50 pound bags.

No feed has come down a bit, but not to pre-Covid prices. Feed was $12.99 a sack before Covid and went up to as high as $16.99 a bag for 16% protein feed. It has come down to $14.99 a sack and I imagine it will stay at that level. The higher protein feed that I give during molt is $16.99 a sack. And all still in 50# sacks.

Eggs went up in our area, $6.59 for a dozen and a half. When I bought some before this week, I paid $5,39.
Towards the end of last year, I noticed if I bought eggs at the beginning of the month, they were cheaper than at the end of the month. Same with milk.
