Bob said. . .

Bob said the other day three coyotes came out from behind the vacant house next door. I am afraid if they get too comfortable in our neighborhood they will stay. I will have to never let Bruno out unattended if that happens. I do not mind them, but do not want them on my side of the street. I would much rather they be in the open field across the street. I see all kinds of wild life here, but I am afraid that coyotes might come and stay.

When I lived in Spencer we had a couple coyotes that would scare our two cows and one bull. It wasn’t very interested in me though. I didn’t like knowing the cows and bull were afraid.

That is sad. Nothing should be after them. They were probably so scared.

I am familiar with Spencer. I never felt like my grandparents cattle were afraid of the coyotes, but they had farm dogs to look after them. Did you know that ranchers and farmers get llamas to protect their livestock from coyotes and wild dogs and wolves and foxes?

@akalinus You do not like to think of animals feeling vulnerable.

I saw coyotes close to the house when I lived in Zephyrhills. They were trying to get into the garbage bins. I shouted at them and they took off in a hurry. I think coyotes are everywhere and they are hungry and snarly. It is best to keep a close watch on your pets and any small children in your care.

Even when I was in school, a long time ago, they talked about the coyotes being able to adapt to more urban environments and likely to be encountered .

I would start trying to make them uncomfortable. They love cats and small dogs for a meal.

@GardenGerty If you can set up motion activated lights and noise makers, that can help. If you do make sure you can move those every few days as they will get used to them. Motion activated water sprays help with a lot of wild animals too. But out here the thing that works the best is a bullet. I have no problem shooting them as I know how aggressive they can be, especially this time of year. It's mating season then through weaning season.

If God's dogs find easy lunches then yes, to staying on.

I have seen a single one in this same yard a couple of years ago. My three cats at the time attacked him.

It would be good if you could scare them away somehow.

@GardenGerty I asked ChatGPT about deterring coyotes. It suggested using motion-activated lights, sprinklers or noise-making. It seems there might be coyote-specific repellents available. It also suggested shiny, reflective tape or alluminium foil around the area.

Did any of them answer to the name of Wile E? Or was there an Acme truck nearby?

Yes, sadly, I know. My friend's husband feeds feral cats. They live about twenty miles from here. She says the coyotes come right in their yard after the cats.

Once in a while, when it's quiet in the late night, I can hear them calling to each other. I think they're still outside the city but we live on one of the outside streets here with that big ditch coming directly in from the forest at the edge of the city and running past the end of our back yard. We see all kinds of wildlife coming up into our yard from that ditch in the early mornings during the Summer. I don't mind the coyotes living out in the forest but would rather they not come into the city itself. I hope they don't live too close to you there. Good luck!

I could always hear them at my grandparents when I was a child. I do see lots of wildlife here. Bob thinks they actually have a den a bit further away, past the roundabout. I have heard of them in town before.

@GardenGerty Just be careful with your kitties. We don't want them to become a snack.

I would be scared as well if coyotes were to be on my side of my property since there are many cats in the neighborhood.

I have seen a single one chase a stray a couple of years ago. At that time I had three adulty cats who chased after the coyote.

If they stay in the woods and out of my business, I can let them be. This is too close, though.
