This was book #8 in this particular series, about a detective in Victorian London who, at the beginning of the series, is injured in a hansom (cab) accident and loses his memory. Slowly over the course of the series he has been regaining it--but slowly.
It amazes (and disgusts/repulses) me some of the types of crimes that were evidently committed in Victorian London (the author is said to "(masterfully) capture the shadowy side of Victoria's England. At first it surprised me, but then I thought...humans are humans...
So far all of this series' stories have been gripping, thought-provoking and emotion-stirring. They are "good reads" because of the emotions they stir. They are certainly not boring.
