A Touching Love Story

On one of my YouTube channels someone shared this story. I thought it was nice and wanted to share here. There was a retired nurse who lived in a nice community with good neighbors. One day a neighbor came to visit. He told her of his concern for his wife. She had recently been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's. He had a nurse coming in during the week but no one to help him on the weekends. He asked her if she might be interested in helping him. She certainly would and they came to a monetary agreement. The retired nurse began going over on the weekend mornings. She would make breakfast. Then it became her routine to bathe his wife and set her hair. After combing it out they would go for a walk around the neighbor. Then they would listen to classical music until dinner. This routine continued for several months until his wife began to decline and grow weaker. He would carry her from room to room, put her in the wheelchair when they went out, and carry her to bed at night. The nurse smiled seeing his devotion and energetic care of his wife. One evening he brought out a small box and set it in front of his wife. He then opened it and took out the lovely band of diamonds and lovingly put it on his wives' finger. She looked off into space but the nurse was sure she could see a bit of a smile slowly grow on her face. He explained that it was their 50th wedding anniversary. They all three set in silence for a few minutes, him holding his wives' hand. The weeks went on with the old man moving his wife from room to room, gently putting her to bed at night, talking to her and reminiscing with the nurse on times long gone by. The nurse would watch as he never seemed to tire or lose his gentle hand and never minded helping in any way he could to make his wife more comfortable and helping her in any way he could. So devoted, kind and loving. As is inevitable at one point his wife would fall into that semi-conscious state and she finally slipped away. The nurse continued to visit the old man every few days. She saw that his energy seemed to have left him and she saw him take on a ashen coloring. In questioning him she found out that he was in stage four cancer. He had steeled himself during his wife's decline to be there for her until the last. He had only communicated about the cancer with his doctor. He had held himself together and put up with the pain until the love of his life was gone then he readied himself to go and meet her. The picture is from wallup.net
