Another family heirloom

As I said a little while ago, every now and then I have a look through a few things that I have lying around, inherited from my parents, to try and decide what to do with them. So I looked in some paper bags and found several strings of jet beads. These came from my grandmother, born in the 1890s, and possibly from her mother before her – jet jewellery was a fashion in Victorian times because Queen Victoria decreed that no-one at court was allowed to wear any other jewellery except jet after her husband, Prince Albert, died in 1861. My mother didn’t wear them because by then jet jewellery was seen as outdated and unfashionable, but she kept them anyway, and now they have come to me. Some of the beads are chipped or broken and some of the strings have broken and need re-threading, but these ones are undamaged. Trying to decide what to do with them I put them on and found that I actually rather like them, they have a rather subtle, understated charm. I don’t really wear flashy jewellery, my favourites are a few silver pieces and a string of tiger’s eye beads. Jet is actually fossilised coal, it’s very lightweight with a muted sheen. I’m going to keep these and wear them, and try to find time to re-string the others, and in due course no doubt my girls will get to decide what to do with them next. Wouldn't wear it myself, but it is rather attractive. Pretty sure that in the York City Museum there is tea service from jet... or there was

We went to Whitby last year. They have a great museum there and of course (being the home of Whitby jet) they had all sorts of amazing things made from jet, and other stones. There were several chessboards made with alternating jet squares and ammonites. Stupidly I didn't take a photo but you can see something of them here

Mom had some strings of beads like those. I think my sister got them after mom passed away.

@Fleura I think most of the jewelry mom had was from her mother or things we kids bought her.

I was going to suggest using them that I see you are going to do. If you decide to get rid of any talk to an antique dealer about them

They are actually really unique and pretty. Wearing them would be a good way to use them and I bet a good conversation piece too. I wonder if they are worth a lot of money since they are so old.

I don't think they are worth that much, if you look on Ebay for 'antique jet beads' the prices seem to be in the tens of pounds. Sentimental value is more of course!

They look nice in the photo. I rarely wear much jewellery, mostly because I forget to put it on! lol

And in the winter here I am wearing so many clothes you wouldn't see most of it anyway!

I think they're very handsome, but I wonder about the single round beads.
