A gerbera in the garden

The photo shows a beautiful gerbera or African daisy which is growing in the garden at our house-sit. The gerbera originated in South Africa and was named in honour of Traugott Gerber (1710-1743), a German botanist and medical doctor. I can’t help noticing how young he was when he died. He travelled extensively in Russia and was a friend of Carl Linnaeus. Linnaeus was a Swedish biologist and physician, now known as the ‘father of taxonomy’. He was responsible for formalising binomial nomenclature, a method of naming organisms. Gerberas are very popular as a decorative garden plant or as cut flowers. There are a great many hybrids. This is a really pretty one. My friend says she has a plant which she will give me when I get back to the village.

They are pretty. They kind look like a cross between a zinnia and a daisy.

Gerberas are pretty. Mine looked a bit different and I had them in three colours.

Gerberas really are stunning flowers—so vibrant and cheerful, whether in a garden or a vase.

That's pretty but at first when you see the photo its look like a toy... but maybe because its too pretty that it looks not real.

My first wife liked those and planted some in every flowerbed. I'm not a fan of them. I prefer roses myself.

@JudyEv I used to have a dozen miniature rose bushes along the front of our last house until I was diagnosed with cancer and didn't have the energy to take care of them anymore. It was several years after the cancer was surgically removed before I had energy to do much of anything... My niece dug up the roses and replanted them at a nephew's house. With my permission, of course.

@DaddyEvil That would have been hard to not to be able to take care of your rose bushes but it's nice that the bushes have been moved to your nephew's.

I don't think they are too hard to grow although I've never had them before.
