Natural Pest Control

I don't garden anymore. I wish I had a place where I could but, fate hasn't allowed for that. I do enjoy reading about it and seeing what new plants and such are on the market now. One thing I think is very important is pest control. Companion planting can help with this. Below are some things I've read and learned while I did garden and found might be interesting to share here: Companion planting has been going on for many years. It involves planting certain plants together. Like planting basil near tomatoes can help to ward off tomato hornworms. Marigolds planted near cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables is beneficial in repelling pests. Planting parsley as a companion is also beneficial. There are several insects that like to snack happily on the bugs that prey on tomatoes. This herb attracts predatory bugs like parasitic wasps and tachinid flies that will feast on caterpillars, whiteflies, aphids and thrips. Also, using homemade pesticides instead of chemicals is a good plan. Ingredients like garlic, soap, and neem oil can help to ensure your plants remain bug-free and continue to thrive. You can also do away with mites on your roses by mixing 1/2 teaspoon of dish soap with a pinch of hot pepper powder in a quart of water. Spraying this mixture on your roses (don't forget the undersides of the leaves). I enjoy learning new things. I also enjoy sharing what I learn. The picture is from my collection.

When we had a garden, we used some of those tips and they do work. I mixed up dish soap and water two years ago and Pretty used it on our tomatoes when aphids tried to take them over.

That's good. I wish we could have a garden and some chickens. My grandmother was allowed chickens even though she was inside city limits. That was back in the 1920s.

@celticeagle We can have chickens inside the city limits here but the max limit is 20 per household. One of my sister-in-laws kept fighting with her neighbors because she liked fresh eggs and they didn't want to hear or smell them. The city council told them to move if they didn't like it.

I've practised companion planting from time to time. It's been a long time now since I had a decent garden.

Same here. Living in an apartment it's difficult to find room.
