Mothman!

Back in December 2024 I wrote a discussion about the sad coincidence of TWO bridge collapses happening over the same river (the Ohio River), both on a December 15. One was in across the river from Louisville in 1893. The more tragic and memorable one was in 1967, over the Ohio River where Point Pleasant, West Virginia and Gallipolis, Ohio are joined by a bridge. The tragedy is known by the nickname of that bridge, the Silver Bridge.
There are very simple, scientific explanations for the Silver Bridge disaster (which took 46 lives). Some people, however, refused to accept the findings of the studies done by engineers and officials. No, THEY, instead, blamed Mothman for the tragedy.
Mothman is like Bigfoot, only confined to Point Pleasant, West Virginia, and only sighted for about a year. The first sighting was in 1966. The last one was the day the bridge collapsed.
You can’t keep a good legend down, of course. Mothman has a statue, a museum, AND a festival.
I wasn’t there just to see it. My primary destination was the Silver Bridge memorials in the area. But Mothman is part of that sad legacy.

I’ll do the discussions about the memorials tomorrow. Yes, it’s quite interesting. They made a movie out of a book (The Mothman Prophecies) about Mothman.

@FourWalls It's amazing that Mothman has not been debunked yet...

@kareng — there’s no evidence at all for it, so of course people believe it.

@RasmaSandra -- oh, bummer. Some of them are better read about than seen, but a lot of times it's really cool to go to the places!

@FourWalls I once wanted to take a trip to see the roadside things I had written about but could not get anyone with a car to take me, Later on when I wrote more about these things I was already living in Latvia,

Our country is full of people who refuse scientific explanations.

I didn’t know anything about Mothman until I researched the Silver Bridge disaster.

@FourWalls I enjoy those stories. Bigfoot, aliens, the Skinwalker Ranch.

Interesting that they would really blame Mothman.

I know. But myths and legends live on forever. A friend of mine had a son in elementary school in Hawaii and they were taught all about Madam Pele but nothing about why volcanoes erupt.

I knew I had vaguely heard of Mothman, but was not sure of the context.

Indeed. The I-35 collapse in Minneapolis was caused by something else, but no less disastrous.

I have never heard of the two bridge collapses over the Ohio River that you mentioned on this post before.
