I have seen several documentaries about the Amish way of life. What a strict life they lead and with no modern conversations. Last night I saw an interview with a woman that has been shunned by the Amish community. She was told to leave and not come back. She had turned her brothers over to the authorities after they abused her. I learned that there are SO many rules they have to live by. It's more like a military encampment that anything else. Just how their clothes and have to be. So many rules down to the width of seams in their dresses, and how much hair can show under those bonnet they wear. This particular woman didn't go by the rules. And, she said that in the community where she lived there was no time when you are a teenager and you get to go out into the world and see if you want to live away from the Amish life. I can't remember what it is called but most Amish community has it. The one she lived in did not. There was a lot of physical and sexual abuse. There were crimes and a lot of evil beings. She faught back and was finally shunned and made to leave. How very sad not to have a choice.

I have heard stories like this before. It's sad that they have to choose either to stay and abide by the strict rules or leave forever and lose contact with family and friends.

I don't think hers was the norm. But they do have their problems just like we do. They just handle it themselves

It's very sad how some of the Amish are shunned. It is also very sad about the abuse they endure. They are a fascinating people for sure.

They seem very strong and devoted to their beliefs.

I think the life that you described is in the minority, not the majority. At least I hope so.

Yes, her sect was an off shute of the normal ones. I feel sorry for this woman. She had been abused by her brothers and chose to report them to the authorities. Something these people don't do. I don't blame her for what she did.
