Bootlegging

Between 1919 and 1933 it was illegal to make and sell alcohol. To help boot leggers avoid the authorities they put a metal plank on the bottom of their shoes. On it were two hoof-like wooden pieces. This would make their tracks look like the hooves of cattle, not human feet. So, they could confuse the authorities, and they wouldn't find out where they were producing the bootleg whiskey.

@celticeagle There is no such thing as a perfect crime either; in reality, everything is discovered sooner or later, but by then the crime will have already been committed.
