In 1912 the Kutol Productions Company developed a doughy soft compound to clean the soot off walls. It worked great but by the 1950s coal was done away with and a cleaner method of warming the home was out.
Luckily the Kutol family had a member who ran a nursery school. She tried the doughy stuff out on the kids, and they loved it. It was non-toxic, easy to mold, and could be used over and over.
In 1956 it was rebranded as Playdough, and it was produced in red, yellow and blue colors.
By 1960 the Fun Factory came out extruding the dough into stars, spaghetti and other forms. Today it is a full-blown franchise owned by Hasbro.
NOTE* I imagine many know this story but it's a fun one to tell. Also, when I was a young my mom had a side job cleaning the walls in a lady's front room. I was quite young at the time and set and played with the stuff that later became Playdough.
